McConnell&co. discussing asking Alabama Sen. Strange 2 resign & thus new special election

GOP leaders weigh drastic plan to save Alabama Senate seat

Source: Politico

Republican leaders are exploring a dramatic remedy to salvage the Alabama Senate seat as fresh polling shows Roy Moore's prospects fading fast.

With less than four weeks until the special election and no sign that the party’s besieged nominee will exit the race, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his top advisers are discussing the legal feasibility of asking appointed Sen. Luther Strange to resign from his seat in order to trigger a new special election.

McConnell aides express caution, saying they're uncertain whether such a move, one of several options being discussed, is even possible. Yet the talks underscore the despair among top Republicans over relinquishing a seat in deep-red Alabama, further diminishing their slim Senate majority.

New GOP polling obtained by POLITICO suggests that Moore is cratering. A survey conducted by the National Republican Senatorial Committee after allegations emerged that Moore had engaged in sexual misconduct with teenagers showed him trailing Democratic candidate Doug Jones by 12 points. Other recent polling has the race closer.

3. In other words

Who gives a rat's ass what the voters want? It's what Mitchie wants that counts.

Of course, if Republicans cared what the voters want, they'd have been bitching about President Hillary for the last ten months.

4. There's no way this can be legal.

I have no idea how AL election law works, but if Strange quits and there's already a scheduled special election, it just moots the need for another special election.

5. Such bullshit

Win or lose - the GOP needs to dance with the one who brung them.

The Republicants of Alabama need to be taught a lesson - let the election continue as is and let the chips fall where they may.

8. I don't think that will work. Strange is there because the Governor appointed him

to fill a vacancy until a special election could be held. That election is now less than four weeks away

There could be NO need to call a NEW special election, since the already-scheduled 12 December election is intended to deal with the fact that Alabama needs an elected senator, having had an appointee in the slot for almost a year now; a new special election would only increase the period during which Alabama had no elected senator

If Strange resigns, the governor can simply appoint someone else to fill the vacancy until the special election is held in less than four weeks. Absentee ballots have already been mailed out

The proposal merely encourages a dishonest power grab by the Governor. What would he do? Reappoint Strange and call a new special election for a year from now?
