(34,103 posts)If you make a lot of pies, you get a pretty uniform pinched edge.
I made 40 pies for Thanksgiving this year, and mine look every bit as uniform as that one - including the top where there si a slight variation in the width of the final pinch - I always have to choose between having two of them too close together or too far apart where I meet back up where I started.
(I'm not saying she made the pie - just that the pie shell looks just like the pies I make every year, and mine are definitely home made.)

(115,869 posts)Look at the crenelations on the crust; they are too regular to be anything but machine-made. A homemade pie crust would be a little irregular and imperfect. The pan it's in also looks like one of those disposable aluminum foil pans you get frozen pies in, not a pan you own and use to bake a "scratch" pie in. Maybe she bought a frozen pie at the grocery store, took it home and heated it up in the oven so she could claim she baked it herself. But that's not a homemade pie.

(34,103 posts)That would be the top in this picture. The join is never perfect - always a bit too small (if I squeeze in an extra pinch) or a bit too large (as this one is, if I decide to stretch the last pinch).
As for disposable aluminum pans - of the 40 pies I made between Monday and Thanksgiving, 33 were in disposable aluminum foil pans.
(Not saying she made the pie herself - just that those two characteristics don't convince me it wasn't homemade.)

It may seem like a small, petty lie, but the purpose is much larger--part of the Trump administration's efforts to maintain its con of the entire country.
procon
(15,805 posts)First give away is the crust. It just to uniformly perfect to have been handmade with your fingers pinching up the edge and creating little imperfections in the process.
And the pie was cooked in a disposable aluminum pie pan, just like any other factory made pie. And it's oversized, just like Costco's pies. No well equipped kitchen, especially not one run by a Southern woman, is without an assortment of pie pans from treasured family heirlooms to ordinary metal, glass, ceramic, and stoneware, but not throwaway aluminum, and definitely not giant sized commercial pie pans.
Next, I look at the pecans. Commercial bakeries use fewer expensive whole pecans and fill in the gaps with broken nut pieces to cut the cost. There's a lot of broken nutmeats in that pie. A good home cook wants to show off her pies, especially a pecan pie, so we buy whole nuts by the pound and cull out the broken bits to use in cookies or an ice cream topping.
See the difference:

(12,132 posts)But I would commit felonies for a slice of that pie. My mom, maker of the finest pecan pies in the world IMHO, passed away several years ago and that pic is the first pecan pie I've seen in a long time that even comes close.
I should probably teach myself how to make pecan pie. Store bought ain't doing it.
procon
(15,805 posts)It's not that hard to make, and you can shave off some work by using a frozen pie crust.
Chocolate Pecan Pie
4 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups light corn syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 recipe Basic Pie Crust, rolled and fit into a 9-inch pie plate
2 cups whole pecans
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, with rack in lowest position. In a heatproof bowl set over (not in) a saucepan of simmering water, melt chocolate, stirring occasionally, until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes (or melt chocolate in microwave). Set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, stir together (do not whisk) eggs, corn syrup, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Stirring constantly, gradually add melted chocolate. Pour filling into prepared crust; place pie plate on a rimmed baking sheet. Arrange pecans in one even layer over filling.
3. Bake just until set (filling should jiggle slightly when pie plate is tapped), 50 to 60 minutes, rotating halfway through. Let cool completely on a wire rack, at least 4 hours (or up to overnight) before serving.
And there's my killer Bacon Bourbon Pecan Pie... eat your heart out Sarah!

(34,103 posts)I baked 40 pumpkin pies this year - and my crusts look just like that - including (as described above) the one width variation where I meet back up with where I started the pinching. (I used to use the fork finish on my two-shell crusts, but I don't even use it for them anymore.)
As to the pie tins - most of mine are made in disposable tins (beause they are going to places I am unlikely to be able to retrieve the tins from - and because I only have about 8 pie tins that aren't disposable and I make my pies in batches of 16 and 24).
I'll defer to your judgment on the pecans, since I don't make pecan pies.
(Note: I'm not saying Sanders made this pie - just that the assessments on the crust don't ring true to me - given the hours I've just spent baking pies and the similarity between that crust and my 40.)

procon
(15,805 posts)Toasting pecans helps to intensify the flavor by releasing the natural oils, and that increases the flavor,
as well as making them extra them brittle and extra crunchy. I heat a dry cast iron skillet and toast them, stirring them around until they're fragrant and golden brown. It takes about 4-5 minutes, and be sure to watch them carefully as they are easily scorched. When they are done, don't leave them in the hot skillet or they will burn, spread them out on a plate to cool.

(17,984 posts)The operative word in her tweet is "managed". That could be several things. She could have looked on as several child slaves prepared it, in which case she could claim to have "managed" those child slaves. She could have "managed" to pickpocket some lower middle class person to get the money to buy the pie. She might have found said pie cooling on a window sill and "managed" to climb over a fence to get to it.

When someone lies all day, every day, it's really okay to assume they're lying.
EDIT: You do make a good point, though. She can probably whip up a pecan pie no problem. My knee-jerk assessment of the boy who cries "Wolf!" is that there's no wolf, but I do recognize that it's a knee-jerk assessment.
