Exposing Americas Biggest Hypocrites: Evangelical ChristiansIts okay to prey as long as you pray.

Ahhh, Christianity in America. Or should I say, the single greatest cause of atheism today.
You know who Im talking about, right? The type of people who acknowledge Jesus with their words, and deny him through their lifestyle. The ones who preach the importance of traditional family values, all while holding a rally and offering standing ovations for a man who preyed on 14-year-old girls.
The ones who look to excuse the despicable allegations directed at Roy Moore by literally quoting the bible, comparing his molestation to Joseph and Mary. I give you the most hypocritical religious group in America, Evangelical Christians.
Aside from preaching anti-LGBT rhetoric and abstinence to the world, evangelical Christians have proudly touted themselves as righteous do-gooders doing the Lords work. Until you insert politics into the mix. Then the Lords work means about as much to them as consent means to Donald Trump.
In 2016, 72 percent of evangelicals reported that immoral leaders could still govern ethically, which was validated when 81 percent of white evangelicals who voted last year cast their ballot for Donald Trump. They were happy to shelve their morality in order to justify electing a thrice-married, casino mogul who bragged about grabbing women by the pussy and rarely goes to church ― but yeah, thanks Jesus. And now theyre ratcheting up the hypocrisy even further with the stern defense of alleged child molester Roy Moore.

But this thread SHOULD be about bad evangelicals, not all evangelicals.
Are liberal evangelicals all bad also? Evangelicals who belong to and vote the Democratic Party? Conservative evangelicals who still live their religion and are shocked and appalled at what's happening around them?

(36,775 posts)Political Christians rather than Christians of faith.
They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.
The Donald who does not have to ask Jesus for forgiveness.

(12,448 posts)is just as good as ACTING like the ideal of Christianity, according to many Evangelicals. Because that's just like them.
As an atheist, I recognize there are good Christians, although I disagree with them about religion. But I think Evangelicals are dangerous. They'll justify anyone and anything as long as they can find it in the Bible. And you can twist just about anything in the Bible to fit whatever you want it to say.

I used to think it was quite benign. And it seemed to be on the decline in North America. But it is insidious, like all religions. It may not be in a cycle now that has a leadership as violent and physically dangerous as Islam is being highjacked by. But it is just as psychologically abusive and dangerous. They all think they are "good Christians". I 'backslid" from a fundy household. I know how growing up with it, one can easily just be lazy intellectually and go along, stay in the same friendship circles, marry a god fearin partner from your church, just like your parents and raise a bunch of your own little believers etc..and not have to consider any other points of view.
And the older you get walking down that path, the more invested you are, the more defensive you become about it. To the point now that anyone ANYONE, even a child molester....as long as he claims to be a Christian too (because duh...God would never let him claim that if it wasn't true!).....is better than the 'other'. Those that are seen as some kind of stupid, misguided fools that the Devil easily leads around. When all the while its they that are being led around by the nose ring by an old book, re- interpreted by snake oil pastors and worse, assholes like Moore and Trump.

(2,955 posts)This country is full of them. They're quick as lightning to condemn Democrats for unchristian behavior, but when it's a Republican they happily look the other way. They love to quote the bible when it comes to gay marriage or moral issues, and yet ignore all the parts about HELPING THE POOR and Gluttony(GREED) being a sin.
The Christian religion at its best is legitimately a good thing. These frauds pervert it to serve political motivations. Similar to radical Islamist clerics who twist Islam into something ugly.

Jesus was nothing before Peter made a cult out of him.

(28,270 posts)I believe people have the right to their faith. I don't attack atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or anyone else for their beliefs.
I could use your argument to attack atheists seeing as how untold millions died under atheistic communist rule but it would be ridiculous, wrong and hateful on my part to assign blame on the innocent.
As far as church donations, I don't belong to any organized church but if I did I would not give one penny to any republican/religious right endeavor.
Let me remind you that many Christians put their lives on the line for civil rights in this country and paid with their lives in many cases.
Or beatings and jail time. Do you condemn these folks too?
How dare you paint all of us with your accusations. Does not Trump do the same with Muslims? And Mexicans? And all PoC?
Really sad to see an attack on Christians slide right on by on this board when if it was any other religion or lack of religion attacked would be loudly condemned and removed.

(16,104 posts)This broad-brushed vilification of "Christians" when some Republicans claim that mantle is the very essence of divisiveness and exclusion.
When conservative Christians point out the Democratic Party is no place for them, "Exposing America's Biggest Hypocrites: Evangelical Christians" plays right into the rightwing narrative.
The Party that most espouses the teachings of Christ has no room in the inn.

We speak out any time there is an issue and have even left churches due to the subtle racism inherent in the "USA went to hell in a handbasket after prayer was taken out of school in 1964" comments. Jim Wallis describes the current teachings as "the perverted gospel". His books are a great resource.
Always good to see there are others out there. We feel isolated much of the time.

This is right wing, christian radio explaining why they're OK with Roy Moore having their not homely 14 year old

young to respectable christian men so they are not led astray into premarital sex. Imagine that. Stroking Roy's

(13,485 posts)that said the same thing almost word for word about Mormons.
It's not a wise move for Democrats now or in 2018 to paint Mormons with a broad brush because they're changing.
We either call it what it is or we don't. Sure there are good people in about any cult or of any creed, believe it or not there are some really nice Republicans too. But It does not excuse the fact that the ideology they choose is poison to this country and irresponsible toward the advancement of humanity on many levels.
Let them go their merry way but appeasing the ideologies that degrade us all for the sake of any vote is not a reason to sacrifice my honor, honesty or integrity. Let "them" be tolerant of our pointing out the failure and danger of their chosen belief. If they are, they are with us. If they are not, they never were.
You can't talk fact to a person who puts beliefs above reality. The only way they will change is when they finally realize they have been bamboozled for their time and money and they get pissed off and leave. Then they start looking at how it happened, then they wake up. Otherwise, they will do anything to protect their belief systems, including voting for liars, cheats and pedophiles.

(501 posts)Liberals may be atheist or non believers, but damn, they adhere more to Christian principles than true Christians do. Pretty sad. It's called just being a good human being. Doesn't require a church or faith. The most judgmental people I know call themselves Christian.
summer_in_TX
(2,733 posts)with REAL Christians. I once thought all Christians were narrow-minded, judgmental, joyless prigs. Then I met real ones who have one agenda - to love. Their love was (and is) accepting without judging. They made me welcome just as I was, not trying to change me. After several months with my guard up for any attempt to convert me, I realized that these Christians weren't at all like my stereotypes. Finally I was disarmed enough to explore what these people believed. Among the surprises I found after coming to faith was the level of joy and peace. Twenty-five years later, it's still a place of love and welcome for the strangers as well as the members.
Many liberal Democrats like me are Christians because we read scripture and it reflects our core values - welcoming the stranger, caring for the poor, standing up for justice, loving our neighbor as ourselves (and that neighbor can be of any race, nationality, or faith).
Heap all the hostility you want on fake Christians. They infuriate me because they lie about what the Bible teaches, what following Jesus requires, they defame Christ, dishonoring God. But those aren't Christians no matter what they claim. If those had been the kinds of people I found when I finally ended up in a church, I'd never be a Christian.

(10,252 posts)The hypocracy of certain evangelicals is evident. They certainly don't practice the teachings of Jesus, from his teachings about not praying in public, to not being judgmental, to not worshipping money, to the most important of all - treating people as we would like to be treated with respect and compassion.
But there is a more fundamental problem, which Buddhists call "spiritual materialism," which is defined as using religion and spirituality to enhance and solidify the ego, the self. It's the sanctimonious self-righteous view of look at me. I'm so pure and holy. God loves me, but not you attitude. I could say a lot more on this topic, but suffice it to say that the Evangelicals are creating a very degenerate religion.
