(11,767 posts)I am a member of the Democratic party and I support Democratic party positions and politicians. When I refer to my political affiliation in less formal terms I say, "I am a Democrat". However, as others have stated, the Republicans have used the word Democrat as a slur because they do not want to call members of our party "Democratic". It is a silly and slimy way that Republicans distort words and we have to be careful not to play along with them.

I am a Democrat Politican being a member of the Democratic Party that runs for a pubic office.
From the search for the term "Democrat", seems to be a pretty well accepted use.

(8,652 posts)I have great respect for you, as you have many posts and a gold star for contributing.
But you're wrong.
I'm a Democrat (noun). I'm a member of Democratic (Adj.) Underground (Noun).
I'm a short (adj.) politician (noun). I'm a dedicated (adj.) politician (noun). I'm a Democratic (adj.) politician (noun).
Get it. Democrat (noun). Democratic (adj.). It's the Democratic Party. Come on, please don't be that stubborn.

(58,785 posts)Jefferson and Madison, etcetera, named their new party the Republican Party.
Hamilton and his hostile conservative faction insisted on calling us "democrats." It was an insult because we were so silly as to think all The People should run the country.
So Jefferson and the rest proudly renamed us the Democratic-Republican Party. And history rolled on from there.
Same for Obamacare. They meant it to be an insult, not the honor it is.
So why all the nonsense when we should be responding with pride at being called Democrat?

(296,101 posts)A Democrat is a member of the Democratic Party - it is not the Democrat party and it is not Democrat politician.

(8,254 posts)we refer to it as the Democratic Party. Maybe where u live elected politicans fo the Democratic Party are called Democratic Politicians,,,, but we refer to them a Democrat Politicians. look are the DU site search I furnished,,,,, seems we are the only ones.

(8,652 posts)The Republicans purposely do that as an insult.
If you tell a person your name, and he purposely calls you a different name, and you correct him, and he still does that, its meant as an insult.

(37,481 posts)btw I've never heard a Democratic politician anywhere refer to himself or herself as a Democrat politician. Republicans ? All the time.

(8,254 posts)I have not broken any TOS
here are just five thread where the term "Democrat Politician" was used (and there are many more) and nobody
complained and nobody made any threats of a PPR. (and some of the same posters as are on my OP do not object on these other OP's). Maybe the TOS should state explicitly not to use this term.

(39,719 posts)The other references:
1 reference from a Republican,
1 reference to a Social Democrat politician not from this country (the terminology does not apply in this case).
You hardly prove your point.

(3,246 posts)Republicans have been using the word democrat as an adjective to demean democrats (noun). It seems impossible you don't know this, but you have now been told by many people.
If you insist on continuing to use it, it will not be because of ignorance, it will be because you don't care that you are insulting democrats.
It's hard to imagine you want to stand your ground on this one. It is an insult. Your choice, I guess.
