I am a member of the Democratic party and I support Democratic party positions and politicians. When I refer to my political affiliation in less formal terms I say, "I am a Democrat". However, as others have stated, the Republicans have used the word Democrat as a slur because they do not want to call members of our party "Democratic". It is a silly and slimy way that Republicans distort words and we have to be careful not to play along with them.

Jefferson and Madison, etcetera, named their new party the Republican Party.

Hamilton and his hostile conservative faction insisted on calling us "democrats." It was an insult because we were so silly as to think all The People should run the country.

So Jefferson and the rest proudly renamed us the Democratic-Republican Party. And history rolled on from there.

Same for Obamacare. They meant it to be an insult, not the honor it is.

So why all the nonsense when we should be responding with pride at being called Democrat?

Republicans have been using the word democrat as an adjective to demean democrats (noun). It seems impossible you don't know this, but you have now been told by many people.

If you insist on continuing to use it, it will not be because of ignorance, it will be because you don't care that you are insulting democrats.

It's hard to imagine you want to stand your ground on this one. It is an insult. Your choice, I guess.
