The British taxpayers.

(7,964 posts)It came from centuries of doing the same kinds of things people like trump do, only worse because they were able to use force and injustice of the power of the state to enrich themselves. Their ancestors stole land, enslaved and indentured people, and manipulated laws to gain more power and wealth - which got handed down to generation after generation. There is no distinction - their personal wealth was created by the state power they held.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)...which was the suggestion, to which I was responding, that their personal expenses are paid by taxpayers.
Yes, yes, I realize that Harry has been running slave ships ever since Elizabeths whipping arm has gotten weaker, and that Charles has been primarily occupied with plundering, etc..
But thank goodness the US has never had royalty, and has thus avoided things like taking land from natives or profiting from unpaid labor.

(7,964 posts)You can sidestep the point that their wealth didn't just arise from some sound investment and use snarkiness and sarcasm like your second paragraph but it doesn't change the fact that they are where they are because of dynastic power. I, for one, like our system where - despite the misdeeds of our forefathers - we don't rely on divine right of kings and have to pay "royals" out of the government till, and there hasn't been the class system found in other countries. Obviously there are some on here who find comfort in defending monarchies.

(9,100 posts)In 2014:
The Queens official expenditure from the Sovereign Grant, the amount released from the public purse each year to finance the monarch, increased to £35.7m - a rise of £1.9m on the previous year.
The steep rise included a 45 per cent increase in the amount spent on the upkeep of royal residences, including Buckingham Palace and the Kensington Palace apartments of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Public spending on refurbishing the 20-room central London living quarters of the couple and Prince George has totalled £4.5m over the last two years but royal aides said the cost of internal furnishings, including a new kitchen, had been met privately by the duke and duchess.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/cost-of-royal-family-rises-twice-as-fast-as-inflation-9563293.html
In 2016:
Obviously, the Windsors family budget is considerably bigger than the average household. This year the report showed the Sovereign Grant was £43 million.
The Sovereign Grant is money that comes from the Treasury taxpayers and is given to the Queen for her and her family to carry out official duties. At current rates, it would reach £45.6 million in 2017/18, which would be a 57% increase since 2012.
The Sovereign Grant was introduced in 2012 and replaced the Civil List and three separate grants for royal travel, communications and maintenance of the royal palaces.
Funding for the Sovereign Grant also comes from a percentage of the profits of the Crown Estate revenue (initially set at 15%) and will be reviewed every five years. Last year these profits totalled £304 million.
http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/money/mortgages-bills/how-much-does-the-royal-family-cost-11363982445194
The queen only agreed voluntarily to pay taxes on her income from widespread landholdings etc. a few years ago. Pretty soon, there's going to be an astronomic bill to pay because Buckingham Palace is so vast and decrepit under all the gold leaf and chintz, and there's no doubt the taxpayer will be expected to foot a large proportion of it. There's also the small matter of the queen's offshore investments, but it's probably infra dig to discuss those.
This doesn't factor in the tourism income, of course, but France, for instance, did away with its royals in some style centuries ago, and Versailles etc. still draw in vast numbers of paying punters. The spectacle could largely go on without them.
The whole institution needs to be downsized and modernized if it can't be abolished. I think the younger generation of royals could happily get on board with a more nordic model of royalty.

(53,061 posts)We haven't just elected a regressive political force but the stupidest most racist chief executive and head of state in the world. If you had any awareness of how this is perceived around the world then you would realize how ridiculous it is for Americans to offer any advice to anyone at this point in history.
Beyond that you have a very weak understanding of what the Head of State is and how it functions.
The head of state is the symbol of unity for the country and allows, in most cases, for a non-political moral force to speak to the larger issues of society. For example in Germany when the political parties have come to a disastrous log jam in forming a new government, which could open the opportunity for far right parties to gain if another election is held today. Head of State President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has intervened lecturing all of the larger parties to put the country first. Some countries choose to elect a head of state and others choose to use a royal structure which intends to strengthen familial ties with the idea that everyone in the country is part of a larger national family.
This is what a head of state can do. Lincoln did it, Roosevelt did it and Obama did it.
Queen Elizabeth, the Head of State for the UK, has been supportive of efforts to have universal health care extended as a way of healing the country after WWII.
Prince Charles has assisted the country by talking openly about the problem of mental illness and the effects of his mothers violent death when he was young:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/20/mental-health-royal-family-government-children-illness
The public profile of mental health experienced another boost this week, thanks to some moving comments made by Prince Harry and the Duke of Cambridge about the impact of their mothers death, nearly 20 years ago. The two royals are working for the Heads Together campaign, which seeks to combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues, and to encourage people to speak more openly about their difficulties.
Harrys admission that he had ignored his own emotional distress for several years before eventually having counselling was a valuable contribution, from a figure more commonly associated with laddish machismo. Williams focus on male suicide statistics was also a good use of his celebrity.
The royal family cannot get involved in divisive party political issues, and so we can only conclude from these interventions that mental health is something that exists beyond the fray of politics. Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues is certainly not something that one would want to identify as a leftwing or a rightwing agenda.
You have made a big investment to show enormous rage not on someone who is Head of State or next to head of state but is currently 5th in line, and is very unlikely to ever become Head of State.
Your comments are chauvinistic, patronizing, ignorant and unhelpful to informed discourse. It is very similar to the kind of ignorant outbursts that Trump exercises when he lectures other countries how they should run their country.
The British will tell you to a person that they really don't need any assistance from you on how to structure their government, their society or their royal family. They have done quite well to achieve a higher educated, less violent society that embraces excellent health care for all of their citizens. You would be well advised to delete the OP because you clearly have little understanding of the issue.
That you would somehow infer that we should not interfere with another country's internal affairs is an argument that we should adopt their system displays just how American-centric you are (again, like Trump).
Not everything is about us. We should be concerned about putting out our own fires and not try to live up to the terrible image that Trump presents.

I give him credit for having been in the military and sent to Afghanistan, even if he was in no immediate danger. I wouldn't want to do that.
Rollo
(2,559 posts)I remember talking with a visiting British scientist in the mid-70's. She opined, Upper Class Twits notwithstanding, that the Royals were a positive force in the UK, because they lent a certain stability and official moral tone to the country.
Of course that was pre-Di and Charles, but still she did have a point, especially since the USA had just gone through a wrenching series of presidents: LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and finally the one man who promised never to lie, Jimmy Carter. I doubt that Nixon never would have made it to a prime minister position if we had the British parliamentary system of government. But it would have been interesting to hear the monarch's opinion of him.
So the royals, while they certainly do things they should be ashamed of, may serve some sort of purpose for the Brits. I just don't know if they will be around in 50 or 100 years. But that's for the British people to decide, assuming they haven't been invaded and subjugated before then.
As for the French proving that you don't need royals to have a thriving tourist industry, OK. But what about the Russians?
