Washington (CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has charged former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn with "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the FBI regarding conversations with Russia's ambassador.

Flynn is the first Trump administration official and the fourth connected to the campaign to be charged as part of Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and members of Trump's team, as well as potential obstruction of justice and financial crimes.
Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates were indicted last month; they pleaded not guilty. And Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty for making a false statement to the FBI over contacts with officials connected to the Russian government.

And cooperation means that Flynn has something to offer up to Mueller against a more important target than himself. That means Sessions and/or Trump family members and/or Trump himself. Flynn was National Security Advisor - that makes him a pretty big fish. And he was working on behalf of foreign interests. For Flynn to save his son from jail time and avoid more serious charges, there has to be a bigger fish on the hook.

The softer the charges he pleads guilty to, the worse it looks for Trump.

His take was that nobody is loyal to trump, he doesn’t inspire loyalty.

It’s ironic. If Trump wasn’t such an impulsive asshole, maybe Flynn holds out for a pardon.

he's only being charged with lying to the FBI at this time. Other charges are possible, but he's not being charged with anything else at the moment.

Also, unless Mueller and the military have made an agreement that we're not aware of, Flynn can still be returned to active duty for the purpose of facing a Courts Martial. Nothing would make me happier than to see him busted to buck private, stripped of all benefits, and locked up in a military prison.
