Washington (CNN)Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Thursday that Senate Republicans will have little choice but to seat Alabama Senate hopeful Roy Moore if he wins next month.
"If he is elected, there are no grounds under the Constitution to fail to seat him," Collins said at a breakfast held by The Christian Science Monitor. "The Constitution says you can only look at citizenship, whether they are a resident of the state, and if they are the proper age. So we have to seat him."
Moore's campaign was rocked earlier this month by allegations that he pursued relationships with teenage girls while in his 30s, including accusations of sexual assault. He has denied all the allegations.
Several Republicans have come out against Moore's candidacy, and Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said if Moore wins, the Republican-controlled Senate should vote to expel him. Collins, who noted Thursday that she supported Sen. Luther Strange, Moore's opponent, in the Alabama Republican Senate primary, said she will take her cues from a Senate Ethics Committee investigation that she believes will be set up if Moore wins.

(9,729 posts)who will instantly become number 100 in seniority and influence, ignored by his colleagues even if they wish him well, which some of them obviously don't. That's what happened to embitter ol' sorry-ass Z*ll Miller from my own state of Georgia, who disgraced himself by making a speech at the Repuke national convention in which he endorsed G.W. B*shit and disdained Senator Kerry's military service in Vietnam. Miller did not run for re-election, and today he is hated by the Democrats and held in contempt by the Repukes. If Moore does get elected, I hope the same fate (only worse!) awaits him.

(52,160 posts)As bad as having him in the Senate would be, it would be worse to let the Senate overturn a legal election.

(1,822 posts)Hate to say it, but I actually agree w/ her. I hope to god he doesnt win and what he did SHOULD keep him out of the Senate, but he doesnt represent me, or probably most of us here. Unless someone here is posting from Alabama, he doesnt represent me and its really up to those that he would represent to decide. Now if something he did was currently happening, or he had been charged w/ something I would change my opinion, but these are charges from yrs ago that I dont believe any formal legal charges have been filed. Like I said in the beginning, i hope and beg the voters of Bama to do the right thing, but if thats what they want....plus it wouldnt be terrible if he was there for Dems. I think many people around the country are turned off by him and Trump and those would be good faces to paint the whole party w/ like they do w/ Pelosi. If you dont seat him they'll just replace him w/ some similar Repub shill that wont resonate w/ anyone around the country.
