blending of the chi and the rho from the Greek alphabet. It is used everywhere in medieval manuscripts dating back to the Book of Kells and earlier. Abbreviations like “Xmas” were common. I once said this to some ranting evangelical who was claiming that using “x” was some demonic new invention. He didn’t believe me and “googled it” ( I know I don’t think they believe in google now) — he never mentioned it again.
