The operation to enter the booby-trapped apartment rented by the suspect in Friday's mass shooting in a suburban Denver movie theater will be carried out in three phases and may include controlled detonations, police said Saturday.
"First and foremost, we need to render the area safe," Public Information Officer Sgt. Cassidee Carlson told reporters. The most immediate threat, she said, is a booby trap that includes a trip wire. "Once that situation is mitigated, that may also include a controlled detonation that may cause a loud boom. There may also be a fire that erupts at this point."
Investigators will use a robot to disarm trip wires linked to explosives, and then use that same robot to remotely remove the improvised explosive devices, a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the operation told CNN. It's also possible one of the bomb experts on site may put on protective gear and go inside the apartment, the official added.
It was not clear where all the explosives were located, though many have been seen in the living area with circuitry reaching into the kitchen, the official said. One of the incendiary devices appears to be improvised napalm and others appear to be mixtures that, if combined with other materials, could cause an explosion, the official said.

(22,144 posts)Amateurs rarely get them right on the first try. I do not expect the police to tell us the truth either.

(56 posts)I haven't kept up with this story since last night.
They're STILL trying to get into his apartment? That can't be good...
I also have to wonder why he didn't use explosives at the theater? Surely it would have killed more and made his escape easier?
Perhaps he planned for the apartment explosives to go off at the time of the shooting but they failed to work?

Law enforcement are big boys and can handle this. They use robots for the real dangerous stuff.

(4,569 posts)Then use the methods that The Patriot Act has allowed.....................I wish The Patriot Act wasn't around, but dammit, this is pretty much precisely what it is supposed to be used for.

(4,569 posts)But I would assume that the proper authorities have some gruesome ways of making someone speak. Until it gets repealed, use the current laws to your advantage (i.e. Citizens United)

(26,507 posts)I thought that these booby traps were bogus and he was bluffing - just looking dangerous - but in reality just a ruse. I guess that this has proved not to be so. I guess they are legitimate booby traps.

(26,582 posts)The blast came after a policeman yelled, "Fire in the hole!" three times.
Fire officials were on standby, but there was no immediate indication of a fire.
Earlier, a trip wire and an incendiary device were both dealt with, Public Information Officer Sgt. Cassidee Carlson told reporters. "This trip wire was set up to clearly detonate when somebody entered the apartment, and it was set up to kill that person," she said. "That could have been a police officer executing a search warrant. This is some serious stuff our team is dealing with."
