‘It’s Not Fair’: Dismayed Trump Supporters Are Feeling ‘Betrayed’ By Tax Plan For The Rich

by Lance Perriman
Dec 4, 2017

Supporters of Donald Trump say they are feeling “betrayed” by the president and his Republican allies after they passed a tax plan that includes massive tax cuts for the rich and nothing for them.

Speaking with voters in the Midwest who played a major hand in electing President Donald Trump, the Washington Post found supporters who are having deep regret in their choice for president.

One Trump voter, Patrick Colley, said he thought he had a president who understood the average worker. He was wrong. Colley admitted that he still hopes to see some benefit from the tax package that still needs to be hammered into its final form by the Republican-controlled Congress. But he said reporting on the plan shows “too much gray about the wealthy” and how they will ultimately benefit.

Colley doubted corporations would invest their tax savings from the GOP Congressional windfall in their businesses by hiring more workers, saying they “are not in a caring mode.”

As for the rich who will see their tax burden go down and don’t have to worry about health care bills, Colley expressed frustration with the bill that will likely be signed by Trump.

“It’s depressing, you know? It’s depressing. I pay like 30 percent [in taxes], and I’m a regular guy. It’s not fair. And a millionaire pays like 12 percent,” he said. “It’s not fair. It’s not fair at all.

Another Republican voter, Ron Stephens, sees the rich profiting while any gains he may receive “will be wiped out by deductions that Republicans are stripping out of the tax code.”

“Why are you going to lower their taxes?” the 49-year-old auto industry employee told the Post. “The level of lifestyle that they have versus everyone else — why do they need that? It’s not that big of an impact for them, but for someone making $30,000 a year? That would have a huge impact on them.”

They love it, but don't want to be blamed for it. So they'll let trumpft, who's just egotistical enough to take credit for something he hasn't read and doesn't understand, have all the credit.

I actually think trumpft is being played on this one. Not that he will mind, since he's going to save so much money on this, plus the golf course deduction as well.

After this bill is signed, my guess is the repubs (who have played the political game much longer and see the writing on the wall) will start urging him to step asside. They'll probably give him cover of "dementia" so that he can go free.

Here, I'll spell out the obvious for you:

1) #fakepresident's margin of victory was smaller than the number of Jill Stein voters (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/308353-trump-won-by-smaller-margin-than-stein-votes-in-all-three);

2) I was responding to the assertion that 99.9% of #fakepresident voters would vote for him again;

3) Since Jill Stein voters numbered more than #fakepresident's margin of victory, had they voted for Hillary Clinton instead then #fakepresident would have lost;

4) If #fakepresident voters are so stupid that they would vote him again, then Jill Stein voters must be equally stupid if they would vote for her again.

Of course I am assuming that you believe that Hillary Clinton would be better than #fakepresident. If you don't think Hillary Clinton would have been better than #fakepresident, then f*** you.

It's wonderful that he sees that the rich aren't paying their fair share, but where the hell is he getting 30% from? One reason we're having such a problem getting Democrats elected is this tendency of many Americans to VASTLY overestimate their income tax burden.

having been a tax preparer for a few yrs now I understand what many people do not, how the tax system works. Many people if they look at all look up the income tax brackets, see where their salary falls and assume thats what they pay. So lets say someone is married, has 2 kids and a household income of say $80,000. If they look up the brackets they see their in the 25% tax bracket and then will moan to all their friends about how they pay a 1/4 of their pay to uncle same. Little do they realize thats their gross pay, which you then subtract the standard deduction of 12,600 and another 4050 for every person on the return before you figure the actual taxable income. So on the 80k example, the person's taxable income is only around 52,000, which is safely in the 15% bracket. Still most people assume they pay 15% on that 52,000, but its actually 10% on the 1st 18,000 and then 15% on whatever is over that. By my figuring this would roughly be 6900 is their amount owed before credits. subtract 2000 for the 2 kids and it comes to 4900 is their actual tax bill for an 80k income, well below a quarter of their income. This example also assumes that they took the standard deduction and didnt itemize.

my paycheck. "Uncle Sam and his buddies" includes Federal taxes, State & Local Income taxes, SSI, Medicare, SDI, etc. I understand the differences, but I do lump it all together. And it all ends up being a hefty percentage take out of your paycheck every two weeks. You don't get the benefit of those tax credits and deductions until you file your taxes at the end of the year, and then you see the effective 15% taxes/et al. But the paycheck to paycheck deductions are indeed way over the effective rate.

Sorry for the rant.

Or so close to it that the interest is irrelevant.
30 years ago, if one had the discipline, lowering deductions and saving the money meant something. Now, if you have 5 grand coming as a refund, the interest accumulated over the year would be around $1.60!
So, if we put it in the bank, it's basically interest free anyway!
Might as set W4 to zero exemptions

An S&P 500 index fund, for example, has had a 11% total return since 1976 (over time, that's a doubling every 7 years on average).

For people who live paycheck to paycheck, they likely have credit card or other loans they might consider using any extra money from reduced withholding to pay down. If it's credit card debt, that's at least 13% interest that's being reduced.

I'm an accountant too, not tax, small biz accounting manager and I definitely find that people do not understand brackets and marginal tax rates at all. Most also don't understand the difference between what is withheld from their pay checks versus their actual tax burden. I guess it's job security for us but it's damned frustrating at times.

and so he assumes he pays 28% on all his income from penny one.

My father is one of those conservatives who complains constantly about how his income tax is too high. I asked him once to dig out one of his tax returns and calculate the percentage of his total income that he actually paid in income tax. He refused to do it. Furthermore, he got angry when I suggested my mother do it - she's a retired accountant and knows exactly how to figure that. It struck me that he got angry because he doesn't want to know that his tax isn't as high as he imagines it is. Instead of learning the truth and being happy and relieved that his actual tax rate is less than he thought, he prefers to imagine that he's being overtaxed. Isn't that weird?

Dec 2017

In the quote, he didn't say "federal income taxes" or "income taxes". He said "taxes". Well granted, the "[in taxes]" is in brackets, so it's ambiguous, so we don't know what he was thinking. But most of us do look at our paychecks and all the tax deductions (federal income tax, state income tax, FICA), and its quite hefty (and that still doesn't include sales taxes or property taxes). And for those of us that adjust our withholding with care, there isn't some big fat refund, since I don't believe in giving a big interest-free loan to the Treasury.

As for FICA, it's 15.3% for the self-employed (a friend of mine is one such, and it's a big hit). For those employed by others, the employer ostensibly pays half that. But employers look on that 7.65% as part of what an employee costs in hiring and layoff decisions -- at the margin they hire when the cost of a worker (salary + FICA + training cost + office space and equipment + etc. etc.) is less than the value they add to the business and less some safety margin. I know because I used to do cost-benefit analysis whenever we hired. Had we not had to pay the FICA part, the value they add could be correspondingly less in the hiring decision. Or we could afford to correspondingly pay a higher wage/salary if we needed to in order to attract workers with the right skills.

Re: adjusting withholding to have more take home pay (rather than a big refund a year later) -- no, I don't put the money in a 0.10% bank account. I don't have a savings account. I invest most of my surplus money in equities -- an S&P 500 index fund, for example, has had a 11% total return since 1976 (over time, that's a doubling every 7 years).

For people who live paycheck to paycheck, they likely have credit card or other loans they might consider using any extra money from reduced withholding to pay down. If it's credit card debt, that's at least 13% interest costs that's being reduced.

Yeah, maybe he meant he pays 30% when every little tax and fee is added up together, but I bet it was federal income tax he was talking about. Because they lost their "it's not fair" privileges when they pulled the lever for Comrade Trump and his Horse-shit Show.

The entire country is rapidly going down the shitter thanks to them, and they wake up ONLY when their taxes are screwed with? They're still in me-me-me mode, same as always.

"One Trump voter, Patrick Colley, said he thought he had a president who understood the average worker."

This statement indicates just how pathetic the average Trump voters really are. Who in their right mind would believe that the festering puss bag would have any concern at all for the working class?

the average worker." He couldn't care less about "the average worker." What he was skilled in was giving voice to their bigotry & resentment of "The Other." So did he really think that people who have pictures taken of themselves like this understand or give a fuck about the middle & working classes? No, he only preyed on their hatred to enrich himself & his Russian overlords.

Idiots.

Sure, I suppose I should be nice about it, but their choice to believe lies was their choice. People tried to tell them the truth. People tried to give them the facts. They didn't care - Trump made them feel good about their own ignorance and their own hate. That's all that mattered to them then, so why isn't it all that matters to them now?

This is exactly what they cheered, chanted, and begged for....why are they so alarmed now?

They got precisely what they wanted.

they want a Ruler to save them and Punish those who are hurting them, and until that changes, they'll keep living in fantasy-land, and they'll keep voting for the Hurters.

Most of them spout off about freedom when all they seem to want is a ruler, a parent figure to do all the thinking for them. Yet they will complain about a so-called "nanny-state" when they want that authority figure to tell them what to think and how to feel. They need a controlled environment where they can feel safe - and that environment must also be a reflection of themselves. Which means all the "others" must be second to them or they feel threatened. It has to be their religion, their way of thinking, their beliefs - or they get afraid and lash out. And everyone not like them is the other.

Yet they champion a (so-called) "president" who holds them in contempt.

They are getting EXACTLY what they voted for. And if they didn't quite understand that in November of 2016, well again, that's too fucking bad. They were responsible for understanding what they were voting for, and if they somehow didn't understand, well then too fucking bad. (Somehow I feel as if I might be repeating myself.) I am so heartily sick of voters going, "OMG! I just didn't know!" as if that absolves them from responsibility. No. You vote. You are responsible for your vote. You do not get to pretend you didn't know what you were voting for. You get the consequences of that vote. Unfortunately, those of us who had the knowledge and understanding to vote for the other candidate are stuck with the results of your vote.

The greater majority can go fuck right off and find a quiet corner to sit in while the rest of us fix this shit, AGAIN. The best thing they can do to help is to stay that and do nothing at all. Just sit there, and do nothing because it's clear, that like a defective choose your adventure book, all of their choices lead to the bad end.

67. It's Like This, Trumpkins: No Happy Endings For River City
Mon Dec 4, 2017, 11:01 AM
Dec 2017

It's like this, Trumpkins: you voted for a con man, you voted for the con man's party, the Harold T. Harold you put in the White House and his pals are going pick your pockets, thanks to your bad judgment, and there will be no happy ending for River City.

I am one of many Democrats who have no sympathy. I didn't, and still don't believe that it takes a college degree to figure out what sort of person you all elected President or what sort of political party he belonged to. (Remember the last recession? His party caused it)A perusal of Donald Trump's past life, research as to how he treated his sub-contractors, and some reading through the Book of Proverbs, should have been more than ample warning. You had those tools, too, and you didn't use them.

You're about to get screwed over, and you're probably not going to like it. We'll be sharing the experience, but we won't be thanking you for it.
