In the school lunch line, self esteem can be expensive

EDMONDS — Many school districts have found themselves in a lunchroom food fight, an ethical quandary that pits financial responsibility versus student self-esteem.

A new policy in the Edmonds School District leans toward the latter, and student lunch debt is on the rise.

The unpaid tab now stands at nearly $28,000. By year’s end, it could balloon to more than $106,000, according to school district estimates.

The issue revolves around what to feed students who have fallen behind on payments.

In the past, rather than have them go hungry, Edmonds students were offered an alternative lunch, sometimes called a courtesy meal.

They were provided raisins, juice and a cheese sandwich on wheat bread. “We still wanted them to have something to eat,” said Barb Lloyd, the district’s director of food and nutrition services.

That practice, which is in place in most local districts, is intended to provide hungry kids some nourishment while keeping costs down.

But the policy has come under local and national scrutiny. Political leaders have pointed out instances of shaming children among their peers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture allows schools to provide alternative lunches when there’s an unpaid tab for regular school lunches.

We can't afford to feed kids but by golly billionaires need a tax cut.

2. I've written about this here on DU in the past. In this case, the PTA needs to step up.

At my son's elementary schools (my sons are in college now, but the program still exists), the PTA set up a fund to cover lunches for kids who forgot their money or couldn't pay. It was a nice supplement to a lot of families. If some kid consistently couldn't pay, they'd send someone to their house to help them sign up for free/reduced price lunches. Whenever I was in the office for something, I'd dump whatever I had in my wallet into the fund.

PTAs in other areas need to step up.

forget about food. Our refusal to invest in education is criminal from top to bottom.

It's barbaric to make kids pay for lunch in a supposedly 1st world country.

Although, the cheese on wheat bread, juice, and raisins sounds healthier that what I've heard gets served in most cafeterias.

I say feed all of the kids breakfast AND lunch. Then you know they are fueled for the day. What kind of society begrudges feeding their kids?

At some point when a school gets enough on free and reduced lunch it is cheaper to just go entirely free given the money spent on paper work etc.

it also breaks open the per meal straight jacket, and allows for more wholesome meals.
per meal left us buying uniform crap from big companies that was not infrequently contaminated. universal let more schools partner w urban farms and other purveyors of healthier foods.

and iirc, it goes by zip code income instead of every student in the school having to fill out a form. i always resent having to fill that out, knowing my kids were not going to qualify.

it also relieves teachers of collecting change every day from the kids who pay for their lunch. and kids from being bullied out of their lunch money.

so win-win-win-win. it is just stupid to do it any other way.

for all grade school and middle school students. Our county can be RW insane, but they've put forth some common sense progressive policies.
