(37,513 posts)Ahh, there's a mass shooter but he didn't say "Allahu Ackbar", so it's clearly not that bad... just a mass murder.
(And yes, I've actually been told it's "*just* a mass murder" word for word)

(38,415 posts)Always read legal analysis by lay people - and especially headlines - with a grain of salt.
The course is still winding its way through the system. A lower court blocked the ban while it was being reviewed. The Supreme Court lifted the temporary lower court block.
It is not a direct review of the merits of the travel ban by the Supreme Court (although an injunction does embed in its analysis a likelihood of success on the merits test).

(56 posts)...just pissed that while the lower courts go thru the motions...the ban IS now allowed to take place...and looks like it was a 7-2 decision to lift the injunction...doesn't look good for sure...

(38,415 posts)And even if you understood the distinction (and were using shorthand), the majority of DU woudl read your headlilne as a decision on the merits.

(56 posts)technically you are right, they are lifting the injunction, which has the effect of allowing the travel ban to happen..although it is supposed to be temporary until lower courts rule, it seems that a 7-2 dec. to lift the inj. indicates that the court is inclined to fully allow it when/if they have to rule on the merits...ughhhh!!!!!

(38,415 posts)And a lot of misinterpretation - largely driven by inaccurate media headlines.
There were quite a few breathless, "Trump due in court Tuesday," threads yesterday - in regard to a motion hearing. This seemed like another of those.
It's hard to predict how they'll ultimately rule - but the likely to prevail on the merits is part of the standard for issuing an injunction which, by overruling it, the Supremes impliedly rejected.

(6,991 posts)And you can see where this is all going.
Getting rid of Roe v Wade.
Getting rid of Unions.
Getting rid of Civil Rights Legislation.
Getting rid completely of laws protecting us from police over reach.
Getting rid of fill in the blank______________________ that's there to protect those with NO voice and NO power.
We're fucked for a generation and MORE, because fatso's filling these courts with unqualified, RWNJ and flat out racist judges for a LIFETIME.
