Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you want Al Franken to resign?
Given our current political situation, just about any other remedy would be better.
Have him do public appearances in a straightjacket or the Hannibal Lecter restraints.
Let his accusers throw tomatoes at him.
Give him a chaperone.
The Senate is too close. And even the things he's accused of pale in comparison to what Trump or Moore has done, and there doesn't seem to be any rush on the GOP side to show those guys the door.
I'm wondering how many people think his misdeeds merit giving the GOP an even clearer path to finish up their tax bill and damage they want to do to the rest of us.
And everyone in the Senate who is calling for Al to resign should promise to permanently do away with the filibuster when Democrats regain the Senate because they shouldn't be allowed to hide behind that if they think they can afford to throw seats away.

(58,785 posts)you've leaped to one in this case. None of us were sitting in on the intense discussions and strategy sessions, with presentations of facts and studies, that our party leaders did. I don't know a fraction of what I need to to make a decision on this, so you certainly cannot. And blowing hot air is not the same as thinking.
Fwiw, I see nothing wrong with displaying unhappiness or happiness as the case may be, at losing Franken. They should know that, including the female senators who started this.
Attacking our party instead of the Republicans who targeted Franken for attack, though, is in a distant galaxy of baaaad decisionmaking. Except for those who want to strengthen the GOP, of course.

If they succeed in shoving him out of the Senate that will be the last straw as far as I am concerned.
It is really sad that the only hope that we have is that Mueller will be able to do something about the Trump/Republican crime family. I most certainly don't believe that we can rely upon the Democrats. They are too busy self destructing.

(1,980 posts)We need him. The fact is, if every politician, entertainer, public figure, etc. was 'fired" for using their power to intimidate, there would be nobody left. I do not condone mistreatment of females - being female myself and having experienced it throughout my life, as most women probably have in one way or another. However, this is just a witch hunt. They are LOVING the fact that the pressure is on for Al to step down because they FEAR him.
The SNL days were full of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Everyone knows it. It does not excuse it but then again, he didn't know he would be a senator one day either. I don't know why we aren't doing what we can to support him - do what THEY do - have him go to sex rehab and "pray for forgiveness" - it seems to work for the GOP, right? Or just deny it happened, like they do.
He is one of our best, politically. Losing him is a huge loss for us.
I'm so mad at my party right now i could scream. FIGHT DAMMIT FIGHT. Stop rolling over and watching while our country is being destroyed! You can't win a knife fight with a banana democrats. You are FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES - get busy!!!
Stop asking for my money when I don't see you doing anything with it. Ask for my time and talents to help organize and get ready for 2018. I do not get one call asking for me to volunteer, just to give money that will be matched. This is about more than money - we need people and energy. MONEY IS THE PROBLEM.

(404 posts)This is a sticky issue (really bad pun), but let's check and see what type of lemonade we can make out of this. I'm looking at this from the perspective of how we can increase the overall advantage of the Democratic Party, particularly its progressive Senate presence.
1. Even if Franken stays in, his effectiveness will be highly diminished. He's already being taken off committees, and it will not be too easy for him to remain an effective force for the progressive movement, or even represent the state of Minnesota.
2. Also, if he stays in until his term ends in 2020, the race will be conflated with the presidential election for most likely Democratic presidential nominee and general election winner Kamala Harris. As a wounded incumbant, it will inflame the conservative minions and risk losing both the senate seat and the presidential electoral votes.
3. Therefore, his resignation makes sense. WE CAN TURN THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE.
4. In Minnesota, the governor is tasked with appointing a senator if the current senator has to leave office for any reason. As the appointment is only valid until the next election cycle, it is an executive decision that needs no legislative nor constitutent input.
5. Ideally, he will appoint Keith Ellison, DNC second-in-command and would make him the most highly-placed Muslim in the US Government, as well as a strong progressive. Finally, he's relatively young at age 54, so he can remain for a long time.
6. As someone who has already been in Congress for over 10 years in the House, Ellison has established roots and contacts all throughout the beltway.
7. In 2018, Ellison would have to run in a special election to fill out the remaining 2-year term. If he's been in office for a year, he will have established his campaign contacts and be able to run an effective campaign. Now, the OTHER senate seat, held by Amy Klobuchar, will be holding it's regularly-scheduled senate election for the full 6-year term. With both Ellison and Klobuchar running, this will provide a UNIQUE advantage to BOTH candidates in terms of messaging and Democratic turnout. Finally, as a mid-term election cycle, there will be no distracting presidential race to gum up the works.
8. In this case, Ellison will be fully expected to win (as well Klobucher) and maintain the Franken seat. With a senate election victory, Ellison will solidify his campaign contribution network, and he will be ideally set up in 2020 when he runs for the full 6-year seat.
Sweet lemonade from a sour GOP-pushed lemon.
The bottom line: It sucks GOP balls that the GOP is hypocritically forcing the negation of Franken's influence, even though his "crime" is not even in the same ballpark as Moore's sexual molestation and exploitation of a child. Thank god Doug Jones will win (we have a very nasty surprise for Molester Moore this coming Sunday, watch and fume). But by replacing Franken with Ellison, we will actually make it much easier for Ellison to become senator and to maintain a progressive lockhold on the senate seat for another generation.

I don't see how anyone can draw that conclusion. There's little chance of losing his seat if he resigns now and there's little chance of winning the Alabama race if he isn't forced out. That's just the opposite of giving the GOP their tax bill.

(10,943 posts)...something seems "off" about the entire Franken scandal, from the very beginning. he has stated the recent woman claiming an unwanted kiss is not accurate. then, someone claimed he groped her waist? Franken probably asked for hundreds of photos and put his arms around the waist or shoulders of people - it's not sexual, it's acknowledging someone who likes you enough to want a photo - and they are the first to want the physical touch.
We really need to hear more... and it's possible those asking for him to resign know more than we do... but, I'm just going on what we have revealed, now. I would let the ethics committee do their job. It seems, to me, something is askew...

Having said that the number of Dems who are calling for his resignation gives me pause. I hate to think that Warren / Sanders would call for his resignation based solely on the allegations in order to be perceived as the we go high when they go low BS. If this is the case than the Democratic Party is more spineless now than it has ever been and at the worst possible time. I want to believe that they would call for his resignation because there is more to this than we know and IF Franken does resign tomorrow it is save the embarrassment of an investigation. Either way this completely and totally sucks and is a total gut punch. Republicans have a president who is on tape saying the things he said as well as a potential traitor...and a pedophile who is most likely going to win a senate seat from Alabama...and the Dems are being forced to resign. It is surreal.

I've supported Franken in the past, and I respect what he's done as a Senator, but the growing number of accusations, and the lack of a clear denial, has tainted his future prospects, which is why the DNC Chair and a majority of Democratic Senators have called for him to step down in favor of an equally progressive Minnesota Democrat.

(4,677 posts)And I say that as a Franken fan since the days of Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot. The sheer number of accusations makes me believe that the guy is probably inappropriate around women, but the real indictment against him is that he seems incapable of defending himself. His wishy-washy half-apologies and vague statements and inability to categorically deny anything mean that, on a purely tactical level, he's a liability. That's the real reason Senate Dems are cutting him loose. A senator with a never-ending stream of accusers who isn't able to defend himself is a distraction the party doesn't need.
Demit
(11,238 posts)All the GOP has to do is produce a "never-ending" stream of accusers (actually seven dubious ones, and none recent) to create a "distraction" that will make any Democrat a tactical liability. Who cares if it's true or not? It's a "distraction" that we must get rid of. Rinse, lather and repeat.
Azathoth
(4,677 posts)Assuming this is all "GOP manufactured," why the hell has Franken not called it out as such since day one? Why has there been no pushback from him? If the GOP has the ability to invent an endless stream of accusers, do you really want someone representing us who only knows how to respond to their attacks by hiding and issuing half-apologies?
Franken has handled this in the worst way possible.
Demit
(11,238 posts)He immediately acknowledged the photo & apologized for the crass humor of it. He DID deny her accusation about the kiss, and her third accusation was revealed by others to be a provable lie so why would he respond?
He didn't have to deny that he "stalked" the radio host because it came out that that accusation was a deliberate mischaracterization.
He denied categorically the accusation about trying to kiss the anonymous woman and he denied saying "it's my right as an entertainer."
This last accusationthat having put his arm around the waist of the woman who asked him to take a picture with her was him "copping a feel"is so absurd as to be unanswerable. In my view. But I suppose you would know exactly how you would respond effectively to a charge that is ridiculous on its face.
But it doesn't matter now. It was "his turn in the barrel" as Roger Stone said, just before day 1, and we can only sit back and wait for whose turn it will be next. Maybe they'll handle it better, in exactly the way you think they should.
