(14,183 posts)We are learning more and more about the accusations. There is no there-there anywhere. Hit job.
All Sen. Franken is guilty of is mixing it up with people every chance he gets in person and in close proximity that often other uncommitted public servants dodge in favor of rich donors and special interests.
He is the real deal--the kind of politician we should clone.

that he's been defanged. They've harmed his stature so much. How will he question a Sessions character in the same way ever again? The entire story will be about him and how he's being investigated and the important issues will be buried under the lede.
The Democrats have ruined him as an effective Senator. I'm really pissed at them but I'm not sure it can be undone by him just staying.
Damn!

(363 posts)I disagree. Consider Dotard and others of his ilk who flagrantly and egregiously violate every standard of decency and then just move on. Many other people, voting people, also forget and move on. That's current politics. Plus he would be fighting the good fight for what is right. There are many things we thought could never be done until they were done.

(363 posts)Okay, so I read the reply saying that staying or leaving is Al's decision. I agree entirely, but we are also free to make our wishes known to him and to the Democratic senators who called for resignation. We are free to do all we can to retain an outstanding senator who is willing to speak truth to power. A democratically elected Senator has been driven out without a fair hearing and many of us are outraged over the loss AND THE INJUSTICE! If Senator Franken still chooses to leave his job that is his decision and it is worthy of respect, but we have a right to voice our wishes. I may be naive, but maybe a great outpouring of public support will impact his decision. Maybe a great outpouring of public opposition and loss of support will sway the Senators who called for his resignation.
Where I am going with is: Would it make sense to initiate an online petition or an event to pressure the Senators to reconsider their rush to judgment or perhaps a call for people to show up en masse at the offices of the senators who demanded resignation. Afterall, the MSM is starting to come around to the Roger Stone/Swiftboating/framing aspect of the issue.
I am not prescribing any particular action, but am throwing the idea out for feedback. Franken's resignation has left me feeling uniquely deflated both because we need Franken and it because it sets a horrible precedent that I would like to see reversed.
Please share thoughts and ideas. I am inclined to at least try to do something about it. And yes, I have written and called and will continue to do so, but I think this is a big enough to consider concerted resistance.
When I was around 18 or 19 I was visiting with a friend who was living with people who considered themselves communists. That virtue of claiming that label aside, I remember talking to one of them about whether trying to work for change is worth it. In other words, can we have an impact or is it useless? Not the way I muse about change these days, but that was then. Anyway, he said something that I still remember: The issue is not only what impact we will have, but also what we will allow to occur without speaking out. I know there are lots of derivations on this theme and many ways to say it, but the way he said it those 40 years ago has stuck with me and remained a touchstone to this day.

(3,457 posts)nobody here bothered to help me through it. There have been mulitple stories in the last few days here defending Al Franken and I have been involved in most of, if not all of them. I decided I needed to tell my effort in all of this and I did nothing but fuck it up. I didn't state it right. I didn't title it right. Or I didn't construct the story right. Anyway, I was attacked. Non-stop and through the protocol of this website I couldn't post anything to defend myself and why. I'm sorry. I tried to do something for the first time and fucked up royal. I was viciously attacked when I was only trying to convey my efforts to defend Al Franken. I will not come here ever again. I'll defend Sen. Franken somewhere else. I'm sorry I didn't know how to post things here or how you like to acknowledge them. My apologies.

Just like then, all someone has to be is accused, and their life is suddenly and forever in tatters, their credibility destroyed and they are blackballed. (1,027 posts)I don't hold out much hope, but I agree. I've contacted my senator Claire McCaskill a few different places about how upset I was and that I think Al Franken was railroaded. So disappointed about this and that she was one of the ones to do this to him. I am all for believing woman but at least give men a chance to defend themselves and look for the truth. I don't trust anonymous accusers and I don't feel the ones that were not anonymous were bad enough to resign. The waist? Come on! If you are that sensitive to someone else touching you don't ask for a selfie. I could be a completely bad judge of character but I just don't believe Al could do something like the kissing accusation "my right as an entertainer" sounds so fake.
The standard needs to be investigate all credible allegations, and then make a decision. Don't dismiss them outright but investigate. Don't make any hasty decisions you cannot undo when you find out you've been scammed.

With Conyers and Franken gone the repubs can't use the "Dems do it too, with no consequences" attack. The Dems will be able to attack trump and moore big time. The message is for the non political junkie voters.
Did I want Franken to resign? No! But it's political. The MN governor who is a Dem will appoint a Dem who will vote the way we all want. So move on and fight like hell to beat the crap out of the repubs.

I'm willing to believe it. But even so I am willing to cut Al Franken some slack after so many years in show biz and in light of the endorsements of so many women that actually worked with him. More important, I am willing to cut him some slack because this nation needs him. And, I feel, after this crisis, Al will mind his Ps and Qs.
We could elect a candidate who would never touch or be the least bit crude to women - but we don't need a latter-day Truman Capote, we need an Al Franken, who is hardworking and dedicated to liberal causes.

(2,104 posts)The situation with Senator Franken pushed me to join this forum. I am very grateful to those who posted phone numbers and links to members of the Senate so that I could express my opinions to them.
As to those who point out that it is all just politics or that we should just get over it-- Politics may, indeed, require compromise, but it is up to every individual to decide which compromises are acceptable. Further, it is the responsibility of every citizen of good conscience to put forth the effort to elevate the level of political discourse.
"Getting over" our disappointment regarding Franken's ouster is also an individual challenge. Each of us will process our feelings at our own pace. Some may linger over feelings of anger, others will be weighted down by dismay.
I take comfort in reading the perspectives of others who support Franken and examine the issue from differing angles. It was difficult for me to make that first call to Franken's office because I did not wish to be perceived as a "bad" feminist. I also did not want to be so partisan-minded that I could not examine the facts of the situation fairly.
The many comments and differing backgrounds of the members here have assured me that we are not in lockstep or blinded to reality simply because Al Franken is a Democrat. It is good for us to disagree. It is good for us to question.
We are citizens, not subjects. The current administration, and many members of our legislature-- of both parties--would do well to remember this.
We must not allow them to think that we have lost sight of our power.
