I brought this up a while ago and did get some good response. But now Skinner has given the official go-ahead to see if the interest is there.
So please, if youd like to see a Craft Beer Group on DU add your name here and lets get it done. I love beer and I love to share with friends. I know I cant share a pint with you all through the internet but as a truly global community I know there has to be others out there on DU that feel the same.
If you are a home brewer you can drop science on us or discuss successes and failures. If you are just a drinker like me id love to know what you are drinking, whats going on in your local scene, and what do you think about whats happening in the industry.

(32,078 posts)Some people prefer sipping whiskey to beer. I would suggest adding wine, but I have a hunch everything else would wind up getting lost. Wine needs its own forum.

(844 posts)I love a good bourbon as much as the next guy so im good with that! Also in beer there is the huge trend of barrel aged everytging.

(6,034 posts)There is an app you can use called "untapped" You rate the beer you drink and gives you recommendations based on your location and what you drank in the past.
Im on untappd. Though I often forget to check in. Ha my name there should be the same as here. PoorMonger (via search, itll say Aaron P. )

(844 posts)Thats great tho. I live in small town Nebraska so there isnt much in the way of events or bottleshares. We do have a local brewery downtown that does a good job thankfully. Ill for sure be posting about them later on.
Brother Buzz
(36,409 posts)I had a fifteen gallon all-grain brew system, buried somewhere around the house.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)My love of beer has also given me a bigger appreciation of wine. One of my favorite Nebraska beers is Nebraska Brewing Companys Melange a Trois ( Belgian Strong Ale Aged in Chardonnay Barrels ) its a bit pricey but worth it for special occasions
Brother Buzz
(36,409 posts)Back in the day, used Chardonnay barrels cost me a whopping twenty bucks, today they are north of a hundred bucks. Bummer, until I visited the barrel factory and hauled away a load of free French oak shavings and extended the use of my old barrels.

It was the 2nd fully licensed co-op brewery and taproom in the US. The first was the Black Star Co-op Brewery in Austin, TX. Opened to the public about 2.5 years ago. We're also on tap in a few local pubs.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)Ill keep an eye out for the name on Tavour. They actually seem to get a good amount of smaller breweries stuff. Especially if its from their friends and acquaintances around there.

(92 posts)For years Craft Beer has been one of my obsessions. From trying new breweries and taprooms to cellaring beers to age them. Really spoiled here in Michigan with the #1 and #2 ranked breweries in the nation here.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)For a few years but if you are in MI Im going to guess you mean Founders & Bells. Love them both. We only get the standard lineups here. Came this way a little over a year ago at the same time, figure its to do with some larger distribution deal.
This year at Thanksgiving, Breakfast Stout was on my table. It makes incredible beer biscuits btw. The beer biscuit mix by Duff Goldman is what I use. Then you pick whatever beer to add to it. Breakfast Stout has been the best Ive tried so far

(12,132 posts)A few years ago he was talking about how my cousin had started brewing his own beer and I said "That's neat, is it any good?"
and he replied without even pausing to think "Oh GOD no! It's awful!" My cousin has since gone on to make bread instead and I can confirm he must be a much better bread maker than beer brewer because it was tasty.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)Gotta be willing to fail if youre ever gonna homebrew. Lots can go wrong. But those mistakes also help a palate get better.
As much as bad beer can be real bad, Ive still wanted to get one of those off-flavor kits they sell for the aspiring cicerone just to see what its like as an experiment.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)that I am not detail oriented enough to do it right. I have a friend that has taken a couple local ribbons for his brews and he is excruciatingly detailed about the notes he takes on time and temperature, and relative humidity when he racks the beer and a million other things from how many oz of this or that hops to what color socks he was wearing and I just know I ain't that guy. He did it for years before he was happy enough with one to give it to someone outside his family.
I think I could maybe operate that Picobrew thing - but I wouldn't even count that as brewing. That's more like just drinking with extra steps.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)Is it like the kurieg of beer?
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)supposedly they sell packs to make something that tastes like whatever your favorite beer is. At 500 bucks it's juuuust a little bit out of my comfort zone for something that may get used once and put in the back of the pantry lol.

rogerashton
(3,920 posts)Washington is a big hop-growing state, so I guess the culture was more brew-oriented. Anyway, I was able to get hops and malt syrup pretty easily. I made some pretty good beer. But (responding to some of the other posts above) my biggest failure was the batch that exploded. We're cozy in the sack at 3 in the morning or so, and the booms start. Fortunately, I had put the whole batch in a big garbage bag, but even so I had brew all over the floor of the kitchen closet.

Bit of a whale for me in landlocked Nebraska. Though im more of a Belgian, Sours & Stout fan than IPA typically. Not that I dont love hops when used well.

(6,907 posts)a sierra nevada celebration right now. That used to count as "craft beer" but not sure any more.
PoorMonger
(844 posts)Sierra Nevada are kind of the OGs Of Craft right? I mean Sierra Nevada pale is still an exceptionally well made beer and better than most things youll find on a consistent basis. Celebration holds up well too. I had a two year old bottle that I just drank in November when I had to clear the basement fridge to make space for a brined turkey and it was still great. I have the last two years of Bigfoot too. Gonna wait for the new one and have em side by side.

(844 posts)Kearney to be exact. Id take you up on that if it werent so damn expensive to ship liquids safely. This is why the Tavour beer club im a member of is such a screaming deal. No matter how big my monthly order is the shipping is 15 dollars flat.
Before I found them I did a trade with a friend from Ohio and I spent more on shipping than I did on the actual beer. Lol

Hoping they bring back that crazy mocha IPA this year. It was the star of my New Years party last year. Part of my brain doubted coffee , chocolate & IPA would work. But that beer is amazing. Like a blondie dunked in cold brew coffee.

All punning aside. I am in a beer club and it is one of the few places politics is kind of off limits. But I have still got some of my non-liberal beer brothers at least thinking about their beliefs. Not by preaching but just making comments.
I will participate in a craft beer group.

Thunderhead Brewing they also make pretty awesome pizza.
They can about 6 beers at the moment. I love that their flagship is a dunkel called Cornstalker since its somewhat of a rare style. It was the first dark beer I ever had when I turned 21.
They also make some neat small batch stuff on site and rotate for the seasons. They have a real nice pumpkin saison and a winter warmer called Tiny Tims Crippling Christmas Ale

I hear lots of good things about Freemont. I see these stuff on my beer club ever once in a while but never at the right time for me. Eventually ill get some though. Also gonna have to figure out how to post images on here if the group goes live.
And as I saw this I just checked Tavour. Only to see I somehow missed anther shot at a Fremont beer. Their winter warmer popped up a few days ago I guess. But I missed the initial notification and now its waitlisted.
Shows how much they are respected amongst us Beer nerds though. The postings for their stuff sell out within hours.

GReedDiamond
(5,311 posts)...this is gonna be, or the name. Haven't heard anything since I sent the art to the brewery, which makes me kinda nervous.
I like your "characters from literature or song names" idea, but it would likely involve paying licensing fees, unless done using public domain characters/song titles.
The artist is this guy:
