Former Gov. Don Siegelman documentary to premiere at the Alabama Theatre this week (al.com)

A documentary on Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman and what filmmakers call the "malicious prosecution and wrongful conviction" of Siegelman and former businessman Richard Scrushy will premiere this week.
The documentary titled "Atticus v. The Architect: The Political Assassination of Don Siegelman," premieres at the Alabama Theatre on Wednesday. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
Siegelman, 70, was released from federal prison Feb. 8 after serving a serving a 78-month sentence for a 2006 conviction. He returned to Birmingham after being released into a community corrections program, in which he will serve the remaining six months of his sentence on home detention. His sentence ends Aug. 8, and will be followed by three years of probation.
Scrushy, HealthSouth founder and CEO, and Siegelman were convicted in 2006 on bribery charges. Prosecutors said Scrushy paid $500,000 into Siegelman's campaign to start a state lottery in exchange for a seat on a state health board. Siegelman was originally sentenced to 88 months in prison in 2007, but nine months later got out of prison on bond as he appealed his conviction. He was later re-sentenced to 78 months and returned to prison in September 2012.

The release showed multiple instances of what the film team called "prosecutorial misconduct." It stated, "The judicial abuse and malfeasance ran so deep, that for the first time in American history, 113 former States Attorneys General from both parties united together to protest the deliberate injustice that was directed at former Gov. Siegelman."
