Alabama Democratic Party orders recount in disputed Perry County commission race

PERRY COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - More than a month after one of Alabama’s closest local elections, the Alabama Democratic Party has ordered a recount in Perry County’s District 1 commission race while upholding the dismissal of Commissioner Albert Turner’s formal election contest.

The ruling stems from Turner’s challenge to the May 19 Democratic primary, where Donald Bennett was certified the winner by a single vote, 398 to 397.

In a four-page decision released this week, the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee determined Turner’s formal election contest was filed after Alabama’s 24-hour deadline and affirmed the Perry County Democratic Executive Committee’s dismissal of that contest.

However, the committee also ruled Turner made a timely request for a recount.
