Judge sentences sisters convicted of Savoonga embezzlement
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) Two sisters convicted of embezzling from the Native Village of Savoonga have been ordered to pay restitution.
Federal prosecutor Bryan Schroder says 60-year-old Sylvia Toolie was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in federal prison and ordered to repay $69,563 to the tribe.
U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess sentenced 57-year-old Peggy Akeya to five years' probation, three months home confinement and 120 hours of community service. She was ordered to repay $14,855.
Burgess also ordered Akeya to record a public service announcement to raise awareness of the consequences of embezzlement.
