Family affair: Dallas, Mitch Seavey cruise to one-two Iditarod finish

NOME -- Behind a strong team of nine champion Alaskan huskies, 28-year-old Dallas Seavey from Willow rolled under the burled arch on Front Street in this fabled gold mining town in the wee hours of Wednesday to seal the deal on a victory in the 1,000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and put the Seavey stamp solidly on the current era of Alaska dog mushing.

AND HIS DADDY FINISHES SECOND! Wow, what a race - I was hoping for Aliy, but this one also just rocked! Starting from Fairbanks, one of the coldest Iditarod's on record, decent snow................ GO PUPPIES!!!!

1. Dallas hasn't always been my favorite musher

(he's kinda cocky sometimes), but I've got to give him credit for running some pretty fantastic races the past few years. I was really pulling for Aliy, or even Aaron Burmeister who has come so close.

I'm pretty impressed with Wade Marrs and Travis Beals who really stepped up their games this year. Dallas might be getting some serious competition in the "young guy" category.

2. I hope the Quest gets an infusion of the younger gen mushers as well -

I thought Fairbanks handled the starting problems very, very well considering all the last-minute changes! It was really fun, the mushers were as excited as the supporters and volunteers.

I love these races!

Dallas CAN be a little......... arrogant, but I attribute that to youth more than anything else. His dad is a class act.

I, too, wanted Aliy - I was in the News-Miner Circulation Department in 2000 when she crossed the finish line, and got to watch it!

3. It's good you guys got to share in the fun.

We kind of missed going up to Willow, especially since we didn't do Nome this year, but at least we got the ceremonial start. I have some pretty good photos, but just haven't been sufficiently inspired to edit and post them.

We'll be in Fairbanks for the Quest start next year. Hopefully, there will be more snow for i'rod.

4. If you get up, I'll buy the Irish Coffee!

With "climate change" (screw that, it's global warming) who knows - y'all may get all the snow next year and Fairbanks will be nekkid at Thanksgiving!

Of course, it snowed down there AFTER the race was moved here............ it's difficult for the coordinators, mushers, and pups not knowing what the heck till 2 weeks before the start.

I'll meet you at the bridge, 1st and Cushman in 2016!
