National labor board backs union in Taj Mahal benefits fight

Source: App-AP

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The National Labor Relations Board is siding with the casino workers’ union in a federal court battle over health care and pension benefits for employees of Atlantic City’s Trump Taj Mahal casino.

The labor board filed a brief Friday in support of an appeal by Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union, which is trying to overturn an October bankruptcy court ruling that canceled health insurance and pension coverage for the casino’s workers.

Trump Entertainment Resorts says the cost savings were crucial to keeping the casino open. It repeatedly threatened to close it last fall.

Editorial: Christie ups the ante in Atlantic City: http://www.app.com/story/opinion/editorials/2015/01/27/editorial-christie-ups-ante-atlantic-city/22391345/

Atlantic City has been one of Gov. Chris Christie’s great frustrations as New Jersey’s leader.

The Jersey Shore resort and one-time gambling mecca is dying, the victim of growing competition and an inability to successfully adapt to a world in which it no longer enjoys a monopoly on legal gaming east of the Mississippi.

Christie has tried to talk up a future in which Atlantic City could still thrive. He has encouraged its reinvention as a tourist destination less dependent on gambling. Fat tax breaks have been doled out. Christie supported online gaming, and he has fought for federal approval to legalize sports gambling, although that battle continues to run into legal obstacles.

Some fellow Republicans have even gotten into the act. Recently Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean Jr. floated the idea of creating tax breaks to entice top entertainers to play Atlantic City venues.

....screw workers ALL OVER the state, not just in the casinos. In the process he has screwed the taxpayers of New Jersey by giving hundreds of millions of dollars to casino OWNERS.

One day it will become evident just how much he's in the pockets of the big casino companies in lieu of his obligations as governor of the state.
