GOP Senator: Don't Force Employees To Wash Their Hands After Using Toilet
Source: TalkingPointsMemo.com
In a week packed with news over concerns for public health, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) described his own history of opposing certain health and hygiene regulations, including those that require employees to wash their hands after using the bathroom.
During a Q&A at the Bipartisan Policy Center on Monday, Tillis related a story from his time in the state legislature in 2010, complaining that the U.S. is "one of the most regulated nations in the history of the planet," video via C-SPAN shows.
I was having a discussion with someone, and we were at a Starbucks in my district, and we were talking about certain regulations where I felt like maybe you should allow businesses to opt out,'" the senator said.
Tillis said his interlocutor was in disbelief, and asked whether he thought businesses should be allowed to "opt out" of requiring employees to wash their hands after using the restroom.

If he thinks washing your hands is government intrusion, he better hope his open heart surgeon doesn't think like him.

(303 posts)the fact that this country's people don't find this to be odious and unacceptable proves how ignorant and out of touch with reality the average american is. You can't blame them though, i like to think that people do the best they can based on the information they have, the corporate media empire keeps them stupid and servile through vapid news & tv shows, national sports, movies full of sensationalized bullshit, and shopping mall culture.

Now I suppose we should all be for CCTV cameras in the bathroom to make sure everyone washes their hands...thus proving the meme that the right says all the time that we are nannies who always want to force people to do things with government regulations.
Don't let them suck you in.
Sorry, but right is right, and regulations requiring restaurant and food prep workers to wash their hands after using the restroom are a MINIMUM ...
I do not fear those idiots ... I greatly doubt anyone who speaks out are going to get swallowed by a sophisticated conservative trap ... don't be silly

You need not fear them, just avoid playing their game...and it is a game.

(2,322 posts)Let me say, it's one of the joys of living in California that it's what this guy would call over-regulated when it comes to the restaurant business. Yeah, it's nightmarish to open one here, and restaurant owners go through perhaps more than they should over it, with a great deal of stress and money in creating the place and keeping it up to standards. BUT I no longer see filth and roaches in restaurants, even the cheap/old ones. Inspectors drop in all the time and if the kitchen isn't clean, the food properly handled, the hands washed (or protective gloves worn), the sign in the window rates them low or, if really bad, they're closed down. Patrons, in true libertarian fashion, go into those with the high rating from the health department, and so other restaurants tend to work harder to get such a rating. But what really matters is that they will be closed down if they're not up to a certain level.
This guy is an idiot if he thinks he's being pro-business by saying this. What evident in CA is that places that get the most patrons are the ones with the "A" rating from the health inspector.

(131,920 posts)there is a scene in one of the episodes where baldrick is telling blackadder what is actually in the "coffee" and treats he has been eating for some time--trust me, you don't want to know!!
actually, from baldrick's "cooking" for captain blackadder, with resources running low:
Private Baldrick's hobbies include cookery, his specialities include:
Rat au Van (a rat that's been run over by a van),
Filet mignon in Sauce Bearnaise (dog turds covered in glue),
Plum duff (a mole hill decorated in rabbit droppings),
Cream custard (cat's vomit),
Coffee (hot mud), with milk (spit), sugar (dandruff) and rather dubious 'chocolate sprinkles' (try and guess what that one is) .
Apple crumble which contains fish
More rat; sautée, which involves:
taking the freshly shaved rat and marinading it in a puddle (When Blackadder asks how long it should be 'marinated' for, the reply is 'till it's drowned')
stretching it out under a hot lightbulb
getting within dashing distance of a latrine
scoffing it right down!
Rat fricassée, which is the same as above, but a slightly bigger rat.
(this series takes place in the trenches during wwI--one of the best anti-war pieces ever)

(602 posts)My partner recently started working for a medical centre that shall remain nameless, and one of his first goals was to increase hand-washing compliance. At the most recent review, it was up to 93%. Personally, I think that's about 7% too low. But he told me that at the review prior to his initiative, the number was in the mid-30s. He said that this is a serious issue at hospitals all over the US and Canada. Yikes.

have you ever read "nurses, midwives and witches: a history of women healers"? by barbara ehrenreich and deirdre english. stunning. I had the privilege of meeting them shortly after its original publication.
google the title, and you can read a free excerpt from feminist press in pdf.
various books of fiction set in the 1800's make reference to the ongoing debate between modern thinking, and doctors who refused to believe in handwashing and hygiene. many women died in childbirth because these doctors would go straight from dealing with an infected person (or corpse) to delivering babies, without washing.

(602 posts)I read a book many years ago about the AMA's war against bonesetters and herbalists, but it was not the book you mention. I've read Nickel and Dimed and several of Barbara Ehrenreich's articles, so I'll definitely put this one on my list.
There's a quiet battle taking place at my partner's place of work. They deal a lot with pain management, and there's a doctor there who is heavily involved in finding herbal treatment alternatives to the prescription drugs. Needless to say, there's a lot of pushback from the other allopaths. On the plus side, many of the doctors are less opposed to incorporating medical marijuana into the treatment plan. Just wait until they find out it's an herb!

Let people opt out of things that protect public health i.e. vaccines and hand washing, so that infections will run rampant throughout the population, therefore dwindling the population to those who are "strong" enough to survive. My friend's brother then went in line and ordered about $35 worth of food, he saw the manger working removing food from the grill, putting condiments on the burgers, etc. He paid for the food & when it was given to him, he loudly stated "I want my money back because he (pointing to the offender) did not wash his hands after doing his business in the bathroom". There are enough reasons to hate the ignorance of republicans, but we are making ourselves look foolish when we don't read the entire story. The man said that restaurants shouldn't have to post a sign saying that employees should wash their hands as long as they post a sign saying that they do not require their employees to wash their hands, which would then discourage any customer (the market) to eat at that establishment.
