Obama delivers sexual assault message at the Grammys: ‘It has to stop’

Source: MSNBC

President Obama made a surprise appearance at the Grammys on Sunday night – in the form of a powerful PSA for the White House’s sexual violence awareness campaign, “It’s On Us.”

In the ad, President Obama tells viewers that nearly one in five American women will be raped, and nearly one in four will experience some form of domestic violence. He then urges viewers to take responsibility for ending rape and sexual assault, saying: “It’s not okay – and it has to stop.”

Obama also called on artists at the Grammys to get involved, telling viewers, “Go to itsonus.org and and take the pledge. And to the artists at the Grammys tonight, I ask you to ask your fans to do the same too.”

“It’s on us – all of us - to create a culture where violence isn’t tolerated, where survivors are supported, and where all our young people – men and women – can go as far as their talents and their dreams will take them,” Obama said.

Now that takes some real guts. To come out against sexual assault? On a show featuring rap and hip-hop?

Brave caring man.

I'm pretty sure Reagan and Bush where in favor of sexual assault and even rape.

Yeah, doesn't he realize that contributing to a culture that abhors sexual exploitation/intimidation and is based on merit/talent would put most of those Grammy performers out of business?

On the other hand, it might explain this review:

Meanwhile, even if Kanye was having a blast, the rest of the show featured a surprising amount of very serious performances. Everything — from Usher’s tribute to Stevie Wonder to Katy Perry’s song dedicated to a survivor of domestic violence — led to an incredibly somber night. Beyoncé closed out the show with “Take My Hand Precious Lord” (introducing John Legend and Common’s “Glory”) as a group of background performers held up their hands in a “hands up, don’t shoot” image.

It seems like only a year ago that Obama White House guest Beyonce and Katy were carrying on like this at the Grammies...oh, wait -- it WAS only a year ago:

P.S: "You didn't like my lip-synched, auto-tuned matator ripoff? Well, there wouldn't BE a Beyonce, Taylor, or Katy if there hadn't been a Madonna -- so you can kiss my 56-year old ass!"

...women to them are just breed cattle - property - not human beings.

In stark contrast, Democrats such as Jimmy Carter, say Violence Against Women Is The Most Pervasive Human Rights Violation In The World - and he's right. He wrote a book called “A Call To Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power.” Jimmy Carter is a Christian. But he speaks out against others using the Bible and religion to abuse and subjugate and enslave women. NO ONE ELSE is doing this important human rights work. President Carter continues to earn that Nobel Peace Prize he won years ago. Carter is one of the few ACTUAL Christians - who WALKS the TALK - that I've ever seen in action. There are so few like him. As a man, he's ten feet tall to me.

Vice President Joe Biden has spent his life defending the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) in the US. Most if not all Republicans are against this legislation and vote against re-ratifying it every time it comes back up.

All these men - Obama, Carter, and Biden - are Democrats.

Meanwhile, we have idiot Republicans wanting to "redefine" what rape is, claiming that if an unwanted pregnancy results from a woman being raped that makes it OK - even "beautiful" and a "gift from God", and who uphold state laws that prevent a rape victim from getting legal help, from being able to get her attacker prosecuted and punished, from being able to get an abortion (drug-induced or surgical), and to uphold laws that force the rape victim to allow her attacker to visit the child or sue for custody of the child. In other words these conservative "men" are fully advocating for sexual and reproductive slavery of women. This type of slavery has a long history in the United States, though most people don't like to talk about it. And that IS what they are advocating and supporting: forced sex, forced pregnancy and childbirth. There is no other accurate way to describe it. They like to excuse it using interesting terminology, they try to re-define it so as to try to make it seem OK, they use the bible and religion to support their sociopathic attitudes - and none of this is morally acceptable. What's behind their advocacy and support for sexual and reproductive slavery of women is that they simply do not consider women human beings fully deserving of human rights. They consider them lesser beings, property or breeding stock - such as cattle, which men ought to be able to use and abuse at will.

I can easily say that this is ONE HUGE difference between Republicans/Tea Party and Democrats/Progressives and it is primarily why I will NEVER - E V E R support any Republican - for anything - public office, county dog-catcher, lawn-mower - nothing. These "American Taliban" are quite simply sociopaths. They have no conscience, no empathy and are utterly indifferent to women as human beings. That's half the population of our entire planet whom they have no respect or regard for as human beings. It is indeed an epidemic.

If there was NO other reason for me to exclusively support Democrats or progressives (there are however many of them), this ONE would be enough.

Some are of the Xtian variety and getting more conservative about Israel, but they will never vote GOP!

Others, though with less empathy or more arrogance, though...

Sigh...

The president picked a perfect venue to get his message out there. It'll have not only a larger audience than usual, but also be more talked about after the fact due to the choice.

It was a good move.
