Former CBS News Colleague Calls O'Reilly's Combat Claim "Absurd"

Blog ››› 1 hour and 9 minutes ago ››› JOE STRUPP

Another one of Bill O'Reilly's former colleagues at CBS News is casting doubt on his claims that he reported from a "combat situation" in Buenos Aires during the Falklands War.

He also recalls O'Reilly being there for a short period of time and not having "any significant role in our coverage of the war."

"I don't recall him doing any major story that anybody remembers and he was there a very short time, then he was recalled, I don't know why," Krause said. "He wasn't a team player and people thought he was grandstanding, basically."

CNN's Brian Stelter on Sunday reported that seven of O'Reilly's former colleagues who reported from Buenos Aires refuted his claims. Media Matters has identified several additional instances in which O'Reilly suggested his reporting had been from a combat zone.

Krause, a former Washington Post reporter who had lived in Buenos Aires for three years prior to the war, said O'Reilly's claims are wrong.

"That's absurd because Buenos Aires was Buenos Aires," Krause said about the war zone claim in an interview Sunday. "It was just like it always was, there was very little evidence of the war in Buenos Aires. The war was being fought thousands of miles away."

"The only danger that we were in was we were staying at the Sheraton Hotel, which was this massive, modern tower overlooking the city. We were in no danger whatsoever," he said. "Except for people who had never been there before and didn't speak Spanish and might have felt a little bit odd. I had lived in Buenos Aires, there wasn't any particular danger. After the U.S. supported Britain there were some anti-American demonstrations a little bit and if you went out it was better not to advertise the fact you were American."

in Argentina to cover the Falklands War is calling bullshit on O'Reilly's version of events. However, most of them don't want to go on the record because they don't wait to be smeared by Fox and the rest of the right wing attack dogs.

Joe Strupp at Media Matters got yet another of Bill O’Reilly’s former colleagues from CBS News to talk about the Fox News host’s alleged “combat situation” coverage in Buenos Aires during the Falklands War, calling his description of his reporting “absurd.”

Even back then, O’Reilly’s colleagues thought he was “grandstanding”.

Charles Krause, a CBS News correspondent from 1980 to 1983 who reported from Buenos Aires during the same period as O’Reilly, is the latest to contradict the Fox News host. In an interview with Media Matters, Krause called O’Reilly’s descriptions of his reporting “absurd.”...............

Even if he were not, most all the Fox on-air people are just as bad, just not as big.

He deserves every bit as much of a smackdown, corporately as well as through social media, as Brian Williams ever earned for himself.

Like Brian Williams, he put himself at the center of a story that is only partly fact, quite a bit of embellishment and the greatest part fabrication.

Williams works for NBC, which pays lip service to journalistic standards while twisting the news to suit the oligarchy. They just don't like getting caught, especially when the violation concerns aggrandizing one of their employees. If Williams has made up that story about a crooked Wall Street banker or an oil tycoon who buys politicians by the bushel, he would have gotten a pass. Next time, he should tell a tale centered on a corrupt defense contractor who heroically smuggles his profits to the Cayman Islands while evading agents from the FBI or IRS. The brass at NBC might appreciate that more.

O'Reilly works for FoxNews. Lying is what he's paid to do. It doesn't bother Rupert Murdoch or Roger Ailes if one of their performing clowns is caught.

My Favorite Wingnut has already informed me that all the assertions about O'Reilly's grandstanding in the Falklands have been disproven.

I guess someone treated MFW the standard Orwellian right-wing tactic that consists of loudly asserting that the damning evidence actually exonerates you. Palin does that, Walker does that--it must be in the Republican Media Playbook.

because what one has to compare to is just to remember it wrong not even have to lie. Billo lied. Brian Williams said it was the other copter. I'm not watching NBC right now because of my principles but because people don't see any issue with Brian they are still watching NBC

Reminds me of a story my ex pastor said ages ago... if you listen the sermons he says about Christ and his teaching and this pastor turns out to be a pervert. the sayings are not perverted. although in the case of some catholics seriously it would have been in the Catholics favor to get rid of the perverts and fix those they harmed. Naturally being Lutheran I assume my higher ups think the current pope is the anti christ but eh he's too old. I can't imagine it..

I could imagine some stupid idiot who can't read the lines on his teleprompter trying to get a news story by wearing a Nazi flag in Eastern Ukraine X_X saying Shiites and Sunni's are the same people and blaming Allah for getting his head cut off
