8 shot dead at multiple crime scenes in rural Missouri

Source: USA Today

The bodies of 8 people were found shot to death early Friday at multiple locations in rural south-central Missouri after sheriff's deputies responded to a call from a young girl reporting gunshots in her house in Tyrone, Mo., according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The dead included the alleged 36-year-old gunman, who apparently killed himself in a parked vehicle in an adjoining county. One person was hospitalized with injuries, the highway patrol said.

A ninth body also found by deputies was an elderly woman who apparently had died of natural causes, the highway patrol said.

Texas County sheriff's deputies found bodies in four separate residences in the Tyrone area after responding to a call around 10:15 p.m. Thursday about a disturbance. The caller, described as a juvenile girl, reported hearing shots in her house "and immediately fled to a neighbor's house," the statement said.

Multiple killings under investigation in Missouri

Nine people have been killed in southern Missouri, a county sheriff confirmed to a local newspaper Friday.

Texas County Sheriff James Sigman confirmed the killings to the Houston Herald Friday morning.

Sigman told the newspaper that there were four confirmed crime scenes and possibly two more.

He didn't provide the newspaper with information about a possible suspect.

Meth has hooked a lot of people in Missouri, which is on its way to leading the nation again this year in the number of meth lab busts. Much of the meth activity occurs in the hilly, mostly rural region south of St. Louis, where Cozort lives.

Meth can be cooked at home, using cheap, easily accessible ingredients. Finding a meth supplier isn't hard, Cozort said.

"You go into a bar and you can find someone who can get you meth," Cozort said. Cozort, 32, said she has been on and off meth since age 16, quit again four months ago and is in treatment.

Missouri is expected to total more than 2,100 seizures of meth labs or dump sites in 2011, according to the state patrol. They include busts in five mobile homes owned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in tornado-ravaged Joplin. The trailers were occupied by tornado survivors.

Missouri is far ahead of other states in meth busts again this year and has ranked at the top nationally for seven years, according to data reported to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Addictive meth is scourge of rural Missouri

The areas near the Arkansas border are especially active.

IMHO. But the other has drug problems written all over it. Add family conflict and you have multiple murders in mulitple locations...where the family members live.

Meth is very very prevalent in rural Mo and AR, they cook the stuff driving down the highway even. Cook in the Wally world shelves.

The problem with meth is that it kills (literally kills) brain cell chains leave only the front neuron firing, so there is no thought, just wild action. The neuron is using saying "more" and this is a very angry drug. Ex-users call it the stupid drug because you can't think.

LANSDALE, Pa. - At least six people were killed Monday in a multi-scene shooting spree in Montgomery County, authorities said, and the gunman is still on the loose. He has been identified as Bradley William Stone, 35, of Pennsburg.

Montgomery County law enforcement authorities identified Stone after an hours-long search for him came up empty. All victims have a “familial“ relationship with Stone, the Montgomery County District Attorney said. According to authorities, victims include Stone’s ex-wife and her family members.

Police are conducting an “extensive search” in and around Pennsburg. People in the area should remain indoors, keep their doors locked and call 911 if they think they have seen the suspect, the district attorney said.

Stone is described as 5’10”, 195 pounds, with short hair. He is currently clean-shaven and is known to use a cane or walker to assist him, according to authorities. Stone may be wearing military fatigues, in either sand or green color. Stone should be considered armed and dangerous, authorities warned. (emphasis added)

4. Houston, Texas or Houston, Missouri?

The USA Today article is confusing in that it states Missouri but includes a statement from a Texas sheriff. Probably Missouri and sloppy writing.

I saw something about this on the news last night where they said that apparently someone in a black SUV was taking random pot shots at lone pedestrians. Hope they catch him.

10. Texas County is a county in Missouri

To help clear up the confusion (cut and pasted from wikipedia):

Texas County is a county located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,008.[2] Its county seat is Houston.[3] The county was organized in 1843 as Ashley County, changing its name in 1845 to Texas, after the Republic of Texas.

The 2010 U.S. Census indicates that it is the center of population for the United States.[4]

At the presidential level, Texas County is Republican-leaning. George W. Bush carried Texas County by two-to-one margins in 2000 and 2004. Bill Clinton was the last Democratic presidential nominee to carry Texas County in 1992, and like many of the rural counties throughout Missouri, Texas County strongly favored John McCain over Barack Obama in 2008.

Like most rural areas throughout Southeast Missouri, voters in Texas County generally adhere to socially and culturally conservative principles which tend to influence their Republican leanings. In 2004, Missourians voted on a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union between a man and a woman—it overwhelmingly passed Texas County with 85.63 percent of the vote. The initiative passed the state with 71 percent of support from voters as Missouri became the first state to ban same-sex marriage. In 2006, Missourians voted on a constitutional amendment to fund and legalize embryonic stem cell research in the state—it failed in Texas County with 61.13 percent voting against the measure. The initiative narrowly passed the state with 51 percent of support from voters as Missouri became one of the first states in the nation to approve embryonic stem cell research. Despite Texas County's longstanding tradition of supporting socially conservative platforms, voters in the county have a penchant for advancing populist causes like increasing the minimum wage. In 2006, Missourians voted on a proposition (Proposition B) to increase the minimum wage in the state to $6.50 an hour—it passed Texas County with 72.03 percent of the vote. The proposition strongly passed every single county in Missouri with 78.99 percent voting in favor as the minimum wage was increased to $6.50 an hour in the state. During the same election, voters in five other states also strongly approved increases in the minimum wage.

found during the search.

Investigators in Texas County are trying to piece together the detail of a shooting spree that left seven people dead in four different locations. The suspect in the shootings is also dead.
...
Texas County deputies reported finding found two deceased persons at this residence. Further investigation revealed five additional people dead and one person wounded in three additional homes.

The apparent suspect, a 36-year-old man from Tyrone, was found dead in a vehicle in Shannon County from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say they found a ninth person dead in the search, but say that person apparently died of natural causes.
