Gogebic Taconite says mine isn't feasible, won't offer false hope (Wisconsin)

Source: Wisconsin State Journal

The company that has planned a huge and controversial mine in northern Wisconsin announced Friday that it was closing its office near the mine site, saying the project was not feasible now.

"Our parent company felt there wasn't enough certainty to it," Gogebic Taconite president Bill Williams told the Wisconsin State Journal. Williams said the company would continue to "investigate" a possible iron mine, but it is closing its Hurley office. Williams said he couldn't say if there was much chance of the project being revived. "We don't want to throw out false hope," Williams said. "They'll still take a gander, but we don't intent on putting out false hopes for anyone."...

...Former Democratic senator Bob Jauch said, “I have four words: We told you so.”

“This company manipulated the public, bought the legislature and co-opted them into participating in one of the biggest scams in Wisconsin history,” said Jauch, a staunch opponent of the project. “Their decision doesn’t surprise me, but I have been predicting it for four years.”

This is the company that donated $700,000 to the Scott Walker campaign and was allowed to essentially write its own mining legislation. They also were the first company to bring mercenaries to Wisconsin, which didn't help their community relations efforts, much.

1. There is a pretty good chance that the mine was a diversion to get pro-mining laws passed

If you mean Rome WI, that's not far from where I farmed. Rome WI is in the Drumlin fields from the Wisconsin glacier...all those little hills are just piles of sand and gravel with a sprinking of boulders capped with clay heavy soil

An old pine tree farm. Clear cutting the trees, planting grass, cut a few holes and you are done.

First course is being done by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Second in the hopper too. Maybe as many as four or five. These will be the best courses in the state, better than Kohler with apologies to Pete Dye and his wife.

With today's prices, opening a mine isn't economically feasible.
