Foes try to stop plan for oil, gas wastewater disposal well in western Nebraska

LINCOLN Opponents attempted to pull the plug on the plan for a commercial disposal well in western Nebraska for wastewater generated from out-of-state oil and natural gas production during a legislative hearing Wednesday.
The Nebraska Sierra Club asked the Legislatures Natural Resources Committee to place a moratorium on importing such production water until adequate safeguards can be put in place to protect Nebraskans and underground freshwater aquifers.
But the deputy director of the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission said a moratorium would be devastating to the states economy because such disposal wells are a necessary and required piece of oil and gas production.
It would have a major impact, said Stan Belieu of Sidney.
