Two adults, two teens are now facing charges in case of a Tampa dog shot and tied to tracks

Source: WFTS

Jacqueline Ingles

Two adults males are now facing charges in the case of a dog found shot and tied to railroad tracks. Two teenage boys were also arrested Wednesday and are accused of the shooting, according to Tampa Police Department.

Darnell Devlin, 18, of 8516 North 16 Street in Tampa, and Kenny Bell, 21, of the same address, are each now facing two counts of possession of a dog for fighting.

Police say both men admitted to owning the dog, now named Cabela, before the shooting.

When police executed a search warrant at the home, they say they found evidence of dog fighting in the backyard and rescued two more dogs that had injuries consistent with dog fighting.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A dog that was tied to railroad tracks and shot was expected to survive after her leg was amputated Thursday.

Tampa Police received three calls around 5:23 p.m. Wednesday from people reporting hearing gunshots. Then they heard a dog whimpering while canvassing the neighborhood, and followed the sound to nearby train tracks.

They found the mixed-breed female dog, about a year or two old, fastened to the tracks with a belt, suffering from bullet wounds in its neck and right shoulder.

They were able to free the dog before any trains came, and nicknamed her "Cabela." They rushed her to a veterinarian, and she underwent surgery Thursday to remove her injured right front leg.

What I do find interesting is that it seems fairly socially acceptable - more so if you're a guy - to "hate" cats, whereas someone who says they "hate" dogs would probably be looked at as some kind of monster.

when people bring up the cat versus dog thing, I just mention that dogs are kiss asses Seriously, I don't have time for any animals right now, but if I did I would have a cat. That being said, I cannot stand anyone who abuses any animal. I don't hate dogs, I just think they are more labor intensive. If I lived in the country I might get a dog.

In this report the police said the original owners claimed the dog ran away or someone stole her, but their investigation showed the sold it to someone, perhaps the two brothers who then sold it to the two teens.

The teenagers were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center and charged with aggravated animal cruelty. One is additionally charged with armed trespassing and possession of a firearm.

What is a shame is all four are so young. They will never change without real professional guidance. The violence will get worse not better once they go through a couple years of Florida's 'criminal justice system'

Serious intervention in these people's lives. Investigation of whoever raised these psychopaths, and a major ongoing serious treatment program. 'Punishment' will probably make them worse. Might as well just put them to sleep without intense intervention.

Just that sticking them in a box and letting them rot for awhile until their time is up is no answer.

Animal abuse is always a psychotic act. These guys need court-mandated incarcerative therapy. Several years worth at least.

I want to know where the hell they came from. Anybody who knows them at all should be thrown up against the wall and threateningly questioned. Get to the bottom of this pit of insanity. Clean it all out.

And if it was a child, even more so. Fix them or kill them, but don't turn them loose ever otherwise.

PS: Florida.

In a way I blame the anti-abortion, anti-birth control crowd. Florida has ignored, mistreated and walled-in part of their society for decades.

Florida is like a 'mad-max' movie in many parts of that state. Horrible animal cruelty, the violence of animal fighting. Little kids exposed to that behavior grow-up the same. It's all they know because their world is so walled in.

and were able to rescue the other dogs as well.

Updated to say I hope they were able to save her leg. It looks like the original article in the OP was incorrect. They brought in an orthopedic surgeon who inserted a rod to hold the shattered bone together. It will take some time to see if the pieces heal back together. Video link shows her hobbling around on her injured leg.

Thank you and kudos to the police for finding and saving Cabela, tracking down the thugs and rescuing the other dogs.

Thu Mar 12, 2015, 08:27 PM
Mar 2015

this is a reply to some on this thread-not directly to the OP--

we want to have these people be slowly put to death? Really?

I agree that people are terrible-but why the need to respond in kind?

I agree that someone who does this is probably an awful person-why would we do the same to them?

How is that less terrible?

A "slow terrible lethal injection"--really--REALLY?

Good God-how is anyone served in this way-to meet like with like in such horrible ways?

I allow that this is a natural reaction, but we are talking about people. People that were most likely not raised to appreciate life in all of its forms.

Just this morning I was talking about bow hunting with my students-a few thought that the correct action to take with squirrels that interrupted their hunting should be killed.

I don't agree--but I sure as hell don't want these kids to be murdered for it.

Some perspective would be great-we are at our worst when we react in this visceral fashion.

It hits home for me, as well. I would not want to be held to account for my feelings when it cuts close.
Even so-it could reflect poorly on me later.

For the record--if animal abusers simply "ceased to be," I would be pleased. That is not to say that I want them dead or in pain for life, etc.
