(R-OK Gov) Fallin signs bill banning payroll deduction for union dues

Source: AP

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — School districts will no longer be able to deduct union dues from Oklahoma teachers' paychecks under a bill Gov. Mary Fallin signed into law on Thursday despite objections from educators who say they're being unfairly targeted.

Because the bill only applies to associations that collectively bargain on behalf of its members, it affects just two organizations — the Oklahoma Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.

"Governor Fallin supports Oklahoma teachers and their right to collectively bargain. They will still be able to do that," said Fallin spokesman Alex Weintz. "This bill simply helps get the state out of the business of collecting union dues."

But Westmoore High School teacher Elise Robillard, president of The Education Association of Moore, said Fallin's signing of the bill suggests she doesn't support public educators.

The GOP's hatred of organized labor knows no bounds. They don't even pretend to oppose them for the sake of "worker's rights" anymore.

I have union brothers and sisters who consistently vote republican. Most have the selfish notion that they're the hardest working people in the history of the world and if unbound by contract wages the company would have no choice but to double their pay to keep them. The rest are racists who don't like to see minorities protected and earning the same as them. One can spot them by their comments that "unions help people who don't deserve it".

It'll be interesting to see how many of the 35,000 members vote to re-elect the gov. I'll guarantee it'll be an embarrassing number.

Scene : Hacks like the governor thriving on the panic of angry union officials keeling over & fainting whenever dues check-off is threatened.

Re-Write : Somebody volunteers @ your bargaining unit to periodically help collect dues from members. ( BONUS : Nobody even has to join a union for this to work ! - JJoslin ( IBEW Local # 58 Detroit )

...before the republicans complain the teachers are wasting taxpayer money by collecting union dues during working hours?

This is really only about cutting off a cash cow for democrats. The UAW used to be the #1 donor to the democratic party, but outsourcing has shifted that burden to public service unions. The main source of income for the GOP currently are energy companies and telecoms and their actions openly confirm the fact.

It's no coincidence that in the years following NAFTA the GOP has so strongly focused on teacher and other civil service unions. The main focus of No Child Left Behind is to close public schools and move students into private academies with federal grants. Once the public schools shutter due to lack of students, the congress ends the subsidies and tell communities to fund their own schools.

Wealthy areas will be able to keep schools open while working class neighborhoods get the best education they can afford with overcrowded classrooms and lack of educational tools. Union pay for teachers will be out of the question when property owners have to pony up yet another tax increase.

for the next few years. She was re-elected last year and can't run again because of term limits.

For anyone who doesn't know, Mary Fallin is the female equivalent of Scott Walker, but maybe a little worse. She is foregoing Medicaid expansion, which is likely going to put some rural hospitals out of business. She is a holy roller who was caught having an affair with a highway patrolman when she was lieutenant governor. Obviously, she hates unions. She loves the death penalty. In short, she's a hypocrite and a terrible governor.

A fundie "Christian" who loves putting people to death. "Hypocrite" would cover that.

Oklahoma has not been blessed with a decent governor for too long.

She's just a terrible woman. An embarrassment to the female gender. A terrible human being and she will have to face God with what she has done. I am no angel but when I see and hear these people, I realize my entrance to Heaven will only be blocked momentarily as I pray for forgiveness for the joy I would feel in watching her explain to God why she is such a sinner. I hope she can figure out how to get there with her ill-gotten gains. Hell must be filled with gold and alas, nowhere to spend it. I will never understand these kind of people. She sold her soul so cheaply.

Both she and the hiway patrolman divorced over this too. Both have remarried but not to each other. Me thinks the dude, Wade Christensen, that is married to mary now is in it for the potential contacts and future money.

Mary fallin is not a good person by any measure. simple as that

PS. I remember when this all happened and have mentioned it here on DU a couple times in reference to her not being a good person, Our lt. governor at the time was caught with her panties down around her ankles with her hiway patrol escort down by the lake. I wouldn't touch her with a ten foot pole, just might catch the cooties from that one
Wade Christensen is her now husband
