Walter Scott was jailed in 1987 on a charge of assault and battery, it has emerged.
Charleston County Sheriff's Department released a report on Friday that says deputies responded to a call about a fight between Scott and another man.
When deputies told the two to break it up, the report states, Scott began shouting obscenities at the other man as well as a deputy before shoving the officer.
Scott suffered a cut and was treated at a local hospital before being transported to the jail.

(15,448 posts)Even if true, such a fantasy wouldn't make Slager's actions in 2015 any less criminal -- if anything, they'd be even more so.

More racialicious "justifications" from The Daily Mirror.

(34,648 posts)Why is that relevant? He was shot in the back while running away, not while in the middle of assaulting people. Nice try.

(15,445 posts)Well, thank god officer Slager saw that justice was finally done.
How about the photo released with the piece.

Sneering, scary black guy pushed a deputy 27 years ago...Slager was doing society a favor, don't cha know?

Like the guy never took a good pic in his life?

(53,661 posts)I also know people that smile that way for several reasons, facial paralysis, tics or just restraint. But the media will use anything to make a POC look ridiculous, dumb or criminal.
It's tiresome to me but deadly to POC. This is the kind of thing that can go straight into the subconscious of people who are border line. Myself, I don't see anything wrong with his look.
Perception of images depend on one's life experience or their media experience. Like all the online visuals with Obama making a face at the same time the rightwing calls him dumb or arrogant.
After a while, people don't resist suggestions anymore, they let it in and there it stays. I gotta go, have appointments to make today and haven't slept all night most of the week. won't post for a few hours. See you later.

(12,233 posts)Typical reaction to taint the story with BS that has nothing to do with the murder.
Likewise, if you don't think the police officers mom popping onto the news and the information about the 8 mo pregnsnt wife is to try and make people sympathetic to the police officer. Too bad he wasn't thinking about them when he murdered Mr. Scott.
BTW, Mr Scott certainly doesn't have the ability to try and make his child support payments now.

Going back 30 years to blame the victim!

(36,594 posts)Not one thing. Why do you people always need to blame the victim. The dead guy didn't touch the cop. The cop shot the unarmed guy dead anyway.
Assault is NOT punished by death and neither is delinquent child support. Stop the bullshit victim blaming.

We all knew the cop did the right by offing him.

In 1987 I used to sneak out of my house and go to keggers in the woods. Should I be arrested for drunk walking in 2015?

(14,733 posts)in the process of making sure that police do not pay for the crimes they commit is digging up every single thing they can from the past of the victim to paint them as 'evil' and 'violent'.
So let's see, Scott shoved a cop and shouted nasty things at him three decades ago when the cop got in between him and someone he was arguing with back when Scott was 20 or so, so of course he's going to be a person who 'fights with police and tries to steal tasers' when he's 50.
Still, plenty of apologists will actually believe that sort of claptrap, which is exactly why the CCSD released that report.

(11,879 posts)This sounds like a kid who got into a fistfight - not so unusual a situation, and with no bearing on his behavior decades later, as an adult.
I guess maybe it establishes why he would want to run from police, but even that's a stretch.

(31,343 posts)While one cannot blame reporters for digging up this kind of thing, it is unseemly for the police department involved in the shooting to release it.
There is only one reason to do that - to demonize the victim, a technique that has always worked in the past.

(7,392 posts)Charleston County can now remove his picture from the "Most Wanted" wall. That's good news because now he can be replaced.
I heard there a guy down there, if you can imagine, still running around free (and alive) who, in 1991, was involved in a harsh conversation with county sheriffs. Those overhearing the conversation remember, to this day, the man's purposeful avoidance of the traditional "yes, massah" and "no, massah" responses. While several witnesses have passes on, several of those recently interviewed said they were still haunted by the experience and hope the perp can be swiftly brought to Charleston County justice.
Fortunately, his time will come.

Bashing Spanish speaking people with disabilities, and the victim of a police murder, all within a week or so of joining DU.
I expect MIRT will get on to this one in the not too distant future.
