Video: Islamic State group destroys ancient ruins of Nimrud

BAGHDAD (AP) Islamic State militants hammered, bulldozed and ultimately blew up parts of the ancient Iraqi Assyrian city of Nimrud, destroying a site dating back to the 13th century B.C., an online militant video purportedly shows.
The destruction at Nimrud, located near the militant-held city of Mosul, came amid other attacks on antiquity carried out by the group now holding a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in its self-declared caliphate. The attacks have horrified archaeologists and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who last month called the destruction at Nimrud "a war crime."
The seven-minute video, posted late Saturday, shows bearded militants using sledgehammers, jackhammers and saws to take down huge alabaster reliefs depicting Assyrian kings and deities. A bulldozer brings down walls, while militants fill barrels with explosives and later destroy three separate areas of the site in massive explosions.
"God has honored us in the Islamic State to remove all of these idols and statutes worshipped instead of Allah in the past days," one militant says in the video. Another militant vows that "whenever we seize a piece of land, we will remove signs of idolatry and spread monotheism."

Bush did NOT know there was difference between Sunni & Shiite Muslims until Jan '03
In case you missed it like me, here's more proof our president is in over his head, a national security risk. According to Peter Galbraith former U.S. diplomat on a Channel 4 special aired Nov 21, Bush didn't know there was a difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims as late as January 2003. The report (link to video at the Dossier below) has a lot more ...here's the part where Bush shows again how in over his head he really is.
Oborne: I traveled to Boston to meet a former U.S. diplomat who had been a leading authority on Iraq for over a decade. A chance remark made just two months before the war, hinted at how the complexities of Iraq had bewildered Americans at the highest levels.
Peter Galbraith - former U.S. diplomat: January 2003 the President invited three members of the Iraqi opposition to join him to watch the Super Bowl. In the course of the conversation the Iraqis realized that the President was not aware that there was a difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. He looked at them and said, "You mean...they're not, you know, there, there's this difference. What is it about?"

To talk in depth about your addition to the thread, Greenwood OK still exists. The city was not blown up, nor completely destroyed by the white mobs of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. Troops were sent in by the government to quell the riots.
The John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, originally funded by the State of Oklahoma, City of Tulsa and private donors, iis now owned by the city and managed by the non-profit corporation, John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation.

Nevertheless, to get back to the OP, I'm having trouble tying this episode of American 20th century violence and racism against the African American community to the recent destruction of Nimrud, a 15,000 year old city in Asia which survived the passage of both the Prophet Mohammed and Saladin, considered to be THE MOST IMPORTANT archeological site on Earth, but was destroyed by the radical Islamic State who believe that artwork depicting ancient pagan gods are idolatry and must be destroyed.
Maybe you should start an OP about the Tulsa Race Riots, and leave this thread for discussing Omaha Steve's OP?

(1,565 posts)I am wondering why something that happened 1700 years ago seems relevant to you today.
I am saddened and outraged at the destruction of art and culture that is occurring today and don't need to point my fingers back 1700 years and say "well others did too".
These acts by this group in this time are disgusting and heartbreaking. I get just as pissed when I hear of artifacts being stolen and sold on the black market. All of these ancient sites and items are irreplaceable cultural history.

(1,565 posts)My point was, and I obviously didn't communicate it well, that nothing can be done about something that happened 1700 years ago but we sure could do something about what's going on today. I don't care if it's being done by religious fanatics like ISIL or by greedy bastards that are stealing artifacts and selling them for a profit it needs to be stopped.
There is no acceptable or excusable reason for either and we need to figure out how to stop it. It's heartbreaking whatever century it's being done in

(29,503 posts)That's why something that happened 1700 years ago is relevant to this story - our knowledge of human history informs us that stupid shit happening five minutes ago is, in some ways, not much different than what happened 1700 years ago.

(5,169 posts)Not to defend Bush... I am sure his policies sped up the timetable... but this was bound to happen in some form. The first WTC attack, the embassy bombings in Kenya and Sudan... all that happened before Shrub got to office.
His degenerate sons would have likely ended up fighting each other when pops was gone, which would have left a power vacuum filled by who? Iran or ISIL?

(4,788 posts)the more modern the better in fact, but they destroy a major world historic site because it's pre-Islamic and pagan. Can we say "hypocrites" boys and girls? Every once in a while a group comes along that just begs to be eradicated and for me, holding a degree in Ancient Near Eastern History and Culture, ISIL is one of those groups.
