The New York Post's Fredric U. Dicker wrote that "de Blasio is positioning himself to be the leftist 'progressive' alternative to Wall Street-friendly Hillary Rodham Clinton as the Democratic candidate for president." That's according to a "national party operative," who told the Post de Blasio hopes a "draft de Blasio" movement will develop among progressive activists that will help the mayor defeat Clinton in the primaries.
The operative told the Post that New York's Working Families Party (WFP), which has supported the 53-year-old de Blasio in the past, is ready to back the draft movement. WFP had urged Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run as a more progressive alternative to Clinton, but Warren has repeatedly said she will not run. "With Warren saying she's not running, de Blasio and his advisers are trying to position the mayor as the 'draft' candidate for the left in 2016. That's why he refused to endorse Hillary last week,'' the operative, who is reportedly involved in presidential politics, told the post.
The Post further notes that de Blasio was accompanied by John Del Cecato, a prominent Democratic communications strategist, on a speech-making trip to Iowa last week. "Why would your ad maker be traveling with you in a non-campaign year? Why was he there with de Blasio in Iowa unless you're trying for something bigger?'' the operative told the Post. The claim comes after de Blasio's TV appearance last week when he refused to endorse Clinton until he saw "an actual vision of where they want to go,"

New York Citys de Blasio for President in 2016? Not Likely
But the mayor insists he isn't interested in any office but the one he currently occupies. Asked for comment, his office directed Newsweek to an April 18 interview with WHO-TV's Dave Price. When asked if he was eyeing the White House in 2016, de Blasio responded, "No, I'm eyeing my own office. The only thing I'm doing is running for re-election as mayor of New York City 2017. That's what I'm eyeing."
Speculation about a possible presidential bid arose earlier this month, when the mayor's office announced de Blasio would travel to Nebraska and Iowa to promote awareness of income equality, a key issue in his bid for mayor in 2014. De Blasio's camp said the trip had nothing to do with the 2016 election, but for some, the timing was too perfectthe mayor missed Clinton, who was campaigning in Iowa, by mere days....
This makes me wonder if there's a leaker somewhere, and this story was fed to that person so they could figure out who was shooting off their mouth? Wouldn't be the first time a trap of this nature was laid.... Either that, or this "national party operative" is pulling someone's chain for shits-n-giggles.

(57,936 posts)Is that a typo on the part of Newsweek? Or is it a Newsweek Freudian slip?

(135,425 posts)We know what his goal is--that "income equality" become more of a reality in everyday life. That's a cornerstone of his administration.

(11,733 posts)This morning we have an example of one of the more curious oddities and inanities of the New York media ecosystem. The New York Post is reporting - or one of its premier columnists is - that Mayor Bill de Blasio is plotting to enter the 2016 presidential race as the left alternative to Hillary Clinton. This is almost certainly intentionally made up nonsense for the purpose of lampooning de Blasio and generating adverse stories for Clinton as well.
... The key with the Post is that these stories, most of which turn out to be false and often simply made up, is that they seed into more legitimate media since New York is where so many national media organizations are located. And the Post is a fun bombastic read that gets everyone's attention.
So is de Blasio planning on running for President in 2016? Almost anything is possible in theory. But 100 to 1 it's another consciously made up New York Post story. Because this is what the Post does. For those outside New York, remember, the Post isn't a real newspaper in the sense of publishing accurate stories. And I say that as someone who used to write columns for them.
