(86,354 posts)I was wondering if there will be some kind of reverberation-like occurrences following yesterday's volcanic activity in Chile. I wonder. I mean, that was a hefty blowout. I am waiting for things to get shaky up here near Yellowstone. There's a lot of mountains between Sand Point and here but you just never know. The land mass in this area is rising rather rapidly, in geologic terms... has been for some time. I know that some geologists think it's a crazy idea but I think the volcanoes are all connected far down in the surface of the Moho. I wonder if that's true and we just haven't been able to find significant evidence of that yet.
Interesting times indeed.
Oh, and there was just another 5.1 in Papua New Guinea this hour.

(2,388 posts)It seems they often react together in a chain of events.
Also have wondered if removing so much oil from the earth is like removing a lubricant that canthen ultimately cause tectonic plates to settle, rub or move with less of a smooth motion causing intense friction. Perhaps fracking is similar but much more localized and superficial.

(86,354 posts)about those points too. Looking at the earthquake map this morning I see there have been a few more and more intense quakes since I looked late last night/early am. Here we go! I suppose it could be a bit shaky in Jellystone this summer, or at least the next month or so. Guess I should secure my breakables a little better.

(3,284 posts)There will be a magnitude 9 quake somewhere off the CA/Oregon/Washington coast that lasts for 3-minutes or so,
and generates a Japan-like 60-foot tsunami.
Fairly likely to happen within the next century or so.
Just be ready, in general, if you live in that zone.
To see what to expect, just check out videos listed here...

Here's one of my personal favorites...
And for the wave, here's a good one...
