President Obama to be one of David Letterman's final guests
Source: CNN
There will be many guests in the final shows of David Letterman's late night career, but the biggest may be the Leader of the Free World.
President Obama will appear on "The Late Show" on May 4, CBS announced on Friday.
The appearance will come just weeks before Letterman signs off on May 20.
This will mark the president's eighth and final visit on the show, three of them as president.

(128,521 posts)although I rarely could stay up to watch the late shows anymore as I got older... He has been such a fixture. Steve Colbert will have some big shoes to fill but I expect he'll be up to the task.

(22,000 posts)There must have been some reason behind that as it seems arbitrary. Another 7 shows and he would have completed the month.

(128,521 posts)although some have show finales earlier (e.g., during the February sweeps, because those ratings are what are used to set the per-30 second prices for commercials planned for airing during the following fall season).

(128,521 posts)then they'll push their season (or series) finales into the sweeps periods to maximize the viewership during the ratings surveys. And now with many networks running series year-round (the summer is no longer a "re-run wasteland" , then you end up with an interesting set of finale dates!

My money says it will be Madonna.

(22,000 posts)He could potentially have more than one. Madonna could not only be a guest, but perform as well. If they cut out some of the other traditional stuff he could have 2-3 guests.

(14,093 posts)He was the first guest on both Dave's NBC and CBS shows. Seems fitting he closes things out.
Another possibility is U2. They'll be back in the US to start their tour around that time, and may want to to do some some shows, since they canceled all their bookings back in the fall because of Bono's injury.
Dave's last guests on NBC in 1993 were Tom Hanks
and a surprise visit from Springsteen, who was the one guest Dave always wanted for NBC, but had never been able to get:
