Rev. Jesse Jackson's campaign against the technology industry's wage gap is getting personal.
Jackson and the United Service Workers West union plan a rally Tuesday near the Santa Clara, Calif., offices of communications tech company Broadcom, which contracts with security company Universal Protection Service, protesting UPS' treatment of employees who are seeking union representation.
One UPS employee, Michael Johnson, said he gave up his security officer position at Broadcom instead of accepting a pay cut and a job transfer after he delivered a petition to that company asking for its support of worker unionization.
"He told me that his hourly wage (would have been) reduced by $6 a pay cut of nearly 30%," Jackson wrote in a letter to Broadcom CEO Scott McGregor, dated April 21. "As the cost of living in Silicon Valley continues to be one of the highest in the nation, his removal will result in severe hardship for an officer asking to have a chance at the American Dream."
