NEW HAVEN >> More than 300 members and supporters of the Graduate Employees and Students Organization at Yale University marched down Hillhouse Avenue Tuesday to deliver a petition to Provost Ben Polak.

The petition, seeking to negotiate secure pay for upper-year graduate students, better mental health services and equity in race and gender, was signed by more than 1,100 members of GESO, organizers said. A laminated 200-foot-long version was carried two blocks to Polak’s office at 1 Hillhouse Ave. by chanting marchers.

“We are a union and we are not waiting for recognition to act like one,” said GESO co-chairwoman Robin Canavan, a third-year grad student in geology and geophysics, to the cheering crowd.

She called for more female faculty, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
