Mo. high school history teacher suspended for showing old film about homosexual pedophile

Source: WDAF

The film was produced by the Ingelwood, Calif., Police Department, for training purposes. The film sets up a scenario of a boy named Jimmy and man named Ralph.

‘Jimmy played baseball all afternoon and didn’t feel like walking home so he decided to thumb a ride,’ the film explains. ‘You see, Ralph’s a homosexual, a person who demands an intimate relationship with members of their own sex, but by now Jimmy felt a fondness for Ralph and they continued to go places together,‘ the film continued.

Simon says a student complained and the administration rejected his reasoning of using the old film.

“I did say right when I started, let’s look at this and see how things have changes since 1959,” Simon said.

Now, parents and others in the community and district who know Simon have signed a petition to give Mr. Simon his job back.

What was the point?

He has taught for 47 years and had combined his knowledge of history and law enforcement (where did he gain all this law enforcement knowledge, if he's been teaching school for 47 years?) for his new class this year...law enforcement.

So for all the things in the world to teach, he decides to show a 1959 film about a "homosexual pedophile"???? And then he says that times have changed? About?

I don't even get what the fuck he was trying to teach the "seniors" that were in the class.

Adding...he certainly did not sound apologetic one bit for this.

I love how now the parents in Where Ever, Missouri now feel the need to support their teachers. Let's reverse the film and show about heterosexual priests molested children or straight guys that beat or rape their wives/girlfriends.

Would the reaction be the same when it was not about homosexuals?

This seems to give a good example of how grooming occurs. Good discussion can be had about how over time we as a society have evolved to recognize both hetro and homo sexual child abuse. Also interesting that in 59 a school district sponsored this video and now in 2015 a school district shuns this video as inappropriate.

Edit: my last thought was that in 59 it was deemed ok to talk about sexual abuse in school and today is not.

Sadly, it is something still common, I have even seen it here. If this teacher was using it as tool to demonstrate how things have changed, then it could be OK. If it was used to pine for the "good ole days," then toss his ass.

I hope he told the class this before the film:

Carole Jenny, MD, Head of the Division of Child Maltreatment at Brown University, wrote in a 1994 Pediatrics article titled "Are Children at Risk for Sexual Abuse by Homosexuals?":
"In 82% of cases, the alleged offender was a heterosexual partner of a close relative of the child. Using the data from our study, the 95% confidence limits, of the risk children would identify recognizably homosexual adults as the potential abuser, are from 0% to 3.1%...
...[A] child's risk of being molested by his or her relative's heterosexual partner is 100 times greater than by someone who might be identified as a homosexual.
CONCLUSION:
The children in the group studied were unlikely to have been molested by identifiably gay or lesbian people."

And

Sean Cahill, PhD, and Kenneth T. Jones, MS, Research Directors of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute, reported in their 2004 article "Child Sexual Abuse and Homosexuality," published by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force:
"Because most child molesters are men, (90%), some have argued that 'homosexual' child abuse is widespread and that homosexuals abuse children at a rate higher than their proportion of the general population, which is somewhere around 3 to 8 percent of the population. Such claims are based on the false belief that men who sexually abuse boys are homosexual. In fact, the overwhelming majority of men who sexually abuse children live their lives as heterosexual men...
In fact, gays and lesbians may be less likely than heterosexuals to sexually abuse children. Two studies that examined the sexual orientation of child molesters found that less than one percent, in one study, and zero percent in the other, were lesbian or gay...
CONCLUSION:
Social science research does not support the claim that gay men and lesbians are more likely, or even as likely, than straight men or women to sexually abuse children. Child sexual abuse has little to do with sexual orientation."

and

M. Thomas Shaw, III, MDiv, Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, and Roy F. "Bud" Cederholm, Jr., MDiv, Suffragan Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, wrote in their Dec. 10, 2002 Boston Globe article "Affirming Gay and Lesbian Priests":
"Suggestions that gays molest children lead to homophobia and create a dangerous atmosphere in which hate crimes flourish. They are irresponsible.
Numerous studies have shown that there is no link between pedophilia and gay sexual orientation... It is simply wrong to conclude that one's sexual orientation is the cause of child abuse.

Mental health professional agree that pedophilia is a disease. Homosexuality is not. None of what makes homosexuality a normal variation of human sexuality applies to pedophilia."

More like how harmful stereotyping occurs. The whole premise of the abuser is an attack on gays:

"You see, Ralph’s a homosexual, a person who demands an intimate relationship with members of their own sex"

I did not like it. It struck me as being the genesis for the religious bigotry against gay men that exists today.

"But no less dangerous and contagious, a sickness of the mind. You see, Ralph was a homosexual, a person who demands intimate relationships with members of their own sex."

Attitudes have changed since then, I hope. But still, my reaction to watching the clip was WTF?

I hope the teacher gets reinstated.

sure it shows how far we have come, but the lesson should not have needed the entire police propaganda film.

It is a good starting point for a discussion.

But, it offends people so, lets not show to kids:

"Roots"
"Reefer Madness"
The Twisted Cross"
"Birth of a Nation"

They might be a starting point for a discussion but people might also be offended.

Should we ignore how things were in prior eras?

Reminds me of the girl who thought I was becoming a Nazi since I was reading a book about Nazism.

Some people think mere exposure to something is all it takes to get people to think that way. Apparently they believe viewing this film will instantly cause you to agree with 1959 attitudes.
