Missouri lawmakers override veto to enact welfare limits

Source: AP

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers voted Tuesday to remove several thousand families from a welfare program by imposing shorter time limits for people to receive the benefits, overriding a veto by the state's Democratic governor.

The new law will reduce Missouri's lifetime limit for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families cash assistance program from five years to three years and nine months, starting in January. The law also imposes stricter work requirements.

The Republican-led House voted 113-42 Tuesday to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto, largely along party lines. The Senate voted 25-9 to override the veto on Monday.

Missouri Republicans argued that low-income families ultimately would benefit by receiving government aid for less time.

"They want their independence; they don't want to be in this poverty trap all their lives and they don't want their kids to be in this poverty trap. They want and they say that we can be successful if we have the tools," said Rep. Diane Franklin, R-Camdenton, who handled the bill in the House.

About 3,000 families are projected to lose benefits — which are capped at $292 a month for a parent with two children — because of the lower lifetime limit starting Jan. 1, according to the Department of Social Services. Nixon said that translates to about 6,400 children.

This is not just targeted at current welfare recipients. It's aimed at everyone who works for a living. People are supposed to be terrified of losing their jobs so that they will put up with whatever working conditions are imposed on them, and anyone who is out of work will have to take any available job, no matter how oppressive or what the pay.

I wish for nothing less than KARMA to be gifted upon those who would take away a family's ability to survive. May the Universe provide a lesson to each of them, may they get to experience what they would so easily force upon those who are less fortunate.

IF we do NOT get out and VOTE.... THIS and more of it is our future. THIS is the result of Democrats not going to the polls, period.

I'm so disgusted right now I'm almost physically sick.

think when they vote, most don't. A lot didn't vote. That's why the midterms were such a disaster for people like this who are affected by the cold blooded, heartless rethug decisions that are aimed at the poor and struggling. They just don't care about poor people suffering through circumstances, not always their fault, who have to struggle to live. If those foxsnooze people would give a damn about their own lives and not be so hateful toward others, and after buying the foxsnooze propaganda to continually vote against their own best interests, maybe we could turn this culture, society economy around by electing people who care for us all, no matter the race. I bet a lot of white people are going to suffer also. This is a sad, sad, hateful country these days.

Missouri was a slave State, but the "Confederate State of Missouri" was just a rump govt.

Acting on the ordinance passed by the Jackson government, the Confederate Congress admitted Missouri as the 12th confederate state on November 28, 1861.[8] The Jackson government subsequently named Senators to the Confederate Congress. It was driven into exile from Missouri after confederates lost control of the state and Jackson died a short while later in Arkansas. The secessionist government continued in exile, eventually setting up a legislature in Marshall, Texas until the end of the war. At the war's conclusion, the successors to the provisional government continued to govern the state of Missouri.

Christ didn't ask us to help the poor.
He demanded we help the poor.
He also said nothing about judging the poor.
He was real clear about who would do the judging.

These people are not following Christ's teachings.

about this "compassionate conservative" thing the Republicans crapped out a few years ago. That was one of those jokes that the rich tell other rich people while they are fucking the middle class right?

The little parasitic solo parents with 2 kids in New Zealand get $384.00 per WEEK plus other allowances depending on circumstances with no set cut off time.
Hell some severely disabled are on benefits for LIFE. My 17 year old who has the cognition of a 3-5 year old automatically gets $238.00 per week and discounted doctors and medication. Pretty sweet deal for someone who lives at home.
WTF is this mentality of beating on the poor and needy?
I cant for the life of me understand Republicans, they are like another sub species of Homo Sapiens that are still waiting to evolve.

Why do they attack the poor? To make unemployment as unpleasant as possible, as a warning to the whole work force. Missouri cuts off unemployment benefits after 20 weeks. After that, welfare is the only option (and welfare is only an option for some). So the penalty for losing your job and not getting another one soon is extreme poverty. That's supposed to put some "discipline" in the work force and keep wages low. It's a kind of economic terrorism.
