UK General Election: Nick Clegg resigns after massive Lib Dem losses

Nick Clegg has resigned as Liberal Democrat leader after his party was decimated at the general election.

The Lib Dems are set to end up with just eight MPs, down from 57 in 2010.

"It's simply heartbreaking to see so many friends and colleagues who have served their constituents over so many years abruptly lose their seats because of forces entirely beyond their control," he said.

Mr Clegg, who held seats, added that "fear and grievance have won, liberalism has lost".

In 1979 the SNP voted with the Tories to bring down the Labour Government. At the subsequent election they lost 9 of their 11 seats. In 2010 the Liberals went into coalition with the Tories and have been wiped out. In 2014 Labour, eventually spearheaded by Brown sided with the Tories in the Scottish referendum. How did that work? Look especially at the result in Brown's old seat.

I remember somebody creating a song/video called "Use My Arsehole (The Nick Clegg Story)" and putting it on YouTube. It's pretty funny, although it contains some very crude language.

6. It was an odd campaign from the Lib Dems

The national campaign seemed to be all about having Clegg back in coalition with little in the way of policy, just a claim that they will moderate either Labour or the Tories. It seemed to be just about keeping Clegg in a nice job without anything being offered in return for this.

Locally the Lib Dems chucked everything but the kitchen sink on keeping Clegg in his Sheffield Hallam seat, which they only won thanks to tactical voting from Tories and 'Kippers to keep Labour out. Everywhere else locally was ignored. I live in a constituency next door to Sheffield Hallam and there was no Lib Dem campaign at all here. They didn't even stand any candidates for the council here.

Last time they joined a coalition with the Conservatives. This time there was speculation that they might repeat that or they might join Labour and other parties in a "keep the Tories out" coalition.

If all they're going to do is throw in with one of the two major parties, they don't seem to add much. Even UKIP is, as I understand it, bringing a different perspective to the election -- a perspective I don't like but it obviously appeals to a lot of voters. As long as that sentiment is present, the democracy would be poorer without UKIP. I'm not sure the same can be said of the Lib Dems.

8. Firstly they need to work out what they actually stand for

Under Nick Clegg virtually every cause they have ever stood for suffered and they ended up standing for election offering voters virtually nothing other then the chance to keep Nick Clegg in a cushy job.

The Lib Dems need to rediscover the lost art of standing up for something, rather then simply falling for anything.

9. Clegg has to be the dumbest politician in the world.

How could he ever think throwing in with the Tories was going to help his party in the future? He sold out liberalism. He is to blame for the destruction of his party.

11. I'm by no means an expert on UK politics but I do try to keep informed and I gotta

agree with the comments so far. This asshole obliterated his own party by embracing more fucked up trickle down.
