Sen. Bob Menendez Files to Move Corruption Trial from NJ to DC

Source: ABC News

(TRENTON, N.J.) -- Senator Bob Menendez has filed a motion to move his corruption trial to Washington, D.C. instead of New Jersey.

Menendez and his spokesperson Tricia Enright believe the case should be tried in Washington for numerous reasons, including allowing for the most effective representation of Menendez's constituents. "The factors the court applies in determining the location weigh heavily in favor of Washington, D.C.," Enright said in a statement. "Importantly, moving the case to D.C. will allow the senator to continue to fulfill his responsibilities and forcefully and effectively represent the people of New Jersey and the issues he cares about with the least possible disruption."

"As the Senator has state from the very beginning," Enright added, "he has always acted in accordance with the law and believes he will be exonerated no matter where the case is heard."

The New Jersey senator was indicted earlier this year over his interactions with Florida eye doctor Dr. Salomon Melgen. The charges center on Menendez’s relationship with Melgen, a close Menendez ally and donor to the senator, in connection with a bribery scheme in which the senator allegedly accepted gifts from Melgen in exchange for using the power of his Senate office to benefit the doctor's financial and personal interests.
