(NEBR) Lawmakers give 1st-round OK to compromise plan that would boost aid to families in poverty

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — Nebraska lawmakers started retracing their steps Wednesday on a proposal to boost monthly assistance for families in poverty.

Gov. Pete Ricketts vetoed the original proposal, which was embodied in Legislative Bill 89, calling it fiscally unsustainable.

The governor then worked out a compromise with State Sen. Kathy Campbell of Lincoln, who had sponsored LB 89.

On Wednesday, state senators amended the compromise language into a different bill and gave it swift first-round approval.
