Legislature rejects lower minimum wage, $8 per hour, for high-schoolers

LINCOLN The Nebraska Legislature rejected efforts to create a lower minimum wage for high school students Friday.
Backers fell short of the votes needed to pass Legislative Bill 599, which would have allowed employers to pay $8 an hour to students up to age 19.
The special minimum wage would have kicked in on Jan. 1, when the statewide minimum wage rises to $9 an hour.
State Sen. Laura Ebke of Crete, who introduced the bill, attributed the loss to the emails flooding in to senators offices urging opposition to the bill.
