Turkey has shot down another Syrian regime aircraft for violating its airspace.
A Turkish F-16 that took off from an airport in the southern province of Adana shot down the Syrian aircraft with two missiles, military officials told daily Hürriyet. "The area is currently searched for the crashed aircraft. It would soon be seen if it was a plane or a helicopter," the source said.
Locals told daily Hürriyet that a Syrian military plane violated the Turkish border twice on May 16 in the Dursunlu-Emek area of the southern border province of Hatay. They added that the aircraft fell into the Syrian side of the border in three pieces.
In June 2012, a Turkish F-4 Phantom warplane crashed into the Mediterranean after being shot down by Syria.

(11,014 posts)The borer between Syria and Turkey is not a straight line but is zig-zag. While flying at Mach 1.5, it is easy to cross into another's territory by a few hundred feet and usually considered as harmless. Fighters may scramble to intercept but they just warn the other side to go back rather than shoot them down.
The only reason Syria is flying planes is to attack ISIS and they are not at war with Turkey. Erdogan gets heartburn because ISIS serves his purpose of killing Kurds and he cannot let ISIS be defeated.
Such "friends" we have.

(90,061 posts)May 16 (Reuters) - Turkey said it shot down a Syrian helicopter on Saturday that had violated its airspace, while Syrian state media said it was a remotely controlled surveillance drone.
NATO member Turkey, an outspoken critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has a 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria and frequently scrambles jets to its frontier worried about territorial violations.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said military jets fired upon a Syrian helicopter after first mistaking it for another type of aircraft due to fog.
"There are rules of engagement," Davutoglu was quoted as saying by NTV news channel's website.
