U.S., China Clash Over South China Sea Disputes

Source: NBC

BEIJING — John Kerry and his Chinese counterpart gave no ground over the issue of territorial disputes in the South China Sea during his weekend visit.

The clash between Chinese and U.S. positions was on display at a joint press conference Saturday where, after a round of talks with Kerry, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described China's determination to defend territorial sovereignty "as hard as a rock" and "unshakable."

"It is the demand of our people ... and a legitimate right of ours," he said.

Kerry zeroed in on "the pace and scope of China's land reclamation" and urged China to "take actions that will join with everyone to reduce tensions."

they are barely keeping the lid on social unrest in China. Massive unemployment would set off a chain reaction every Chinese leader fears. They are just as beholden to us as we are to them.

The aftermath of the Cultural revolution made living off tree bark, old shoes and dead bodies the norm outside Beijing. That was in the 60's, not that long ago. Life is cheap in China and the military would keep the peoples republic under control. The US economy and worthless debt would never recover from such a blow.

the nuclear deterrent has been replaced by the economic deterrent which is the only good thing, for the US, that came out of free trade.

those little islands would be totally meaningless. Totally useless as a military outpost. This is more about claiming SEA than LAND.

I personally suspect the other part of their claiming the entire South China Sea as their own is being able to control maritime traffic to their own advantage including charging ships to pass through the area eventually.

They may be trying to change the rules. With the technology, money, and equipment I believe it would be very possible to make an underwater shoal into a large island.
