Gov. John Kasich rescinds union rights for Ohio care workers

Source: News Herald

By Julie Carr Smyth

COLUMBUS (AP) — Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Friday rescinded a pair of directives issued by his predecessor that allowed independent home health care and child care workers under contract with the state to unionize, arguing the key union benefit of health insurance coverage is now widely available elsewhere.

An executive order signed by Kasich walks back a pair of orders signed by then-Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat — one in 2007 for home health care workers, and another in 2008 for child care workers — allowing collective bargaining.

After Kasich signed an unpopular 2011 law severely restricting the collective bargaining rights of public-employee unions, Strickland was a leading voice in a successful effort to repeal the law in a direct vote by voters.

Kasich conceded defeat and has since taken a conciliatory stance toward labor. A contract expected to be finalized soon gives about 30,000 unionized state employees their first raises since 2008. Those will cost about $295 million over three years.

I voted against him last time around. Twice just to be sure.

OK - only once but if I still lived in Chicago, definitely twice.

He's a compete dip-shit but let's face it, the Ohio Dems candidate was weaker than an over-cooked noodle. The guy ended up having no drivers license for more than 10 years...during which time he often drove state vehicles. Then, he went radio silence when he was caught in some parking lot, in a car, at 3am with some woman who was not his wife.

So Kasich gets a "mandate" with 65% of the vote because his opponent disappeared 4 weeks before the election.

The Ohio Dem party has consistently figured out how to find the least electable candidate. This election was no different.

Joyce Brewer, a veteran child care worker in Marion County, was among union-eligible workers who opted out after it became an option. She has health coverage through her husband’s employer.

“I won’t say I’m anti-union. My husband works in a union shop. My dad was big in the union,” she said. “But being self-employed, I’m not sure what the union feels they can do for us.”

my guess is you'll find out soon enough

The State and county pays her salary. She may pick and choose when and where she wants to work, that doesn't mean she's self employed.

...as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution is the bigger issue here. One cannot block law abiding citizens from forming a group. I guess what the Ohio Home care workers needed to do was start a religion....
