UN Envoy: IS Poised To Become 'Serious Threat' In Libya
Source: Associated Press
SOUTHERN SHUNEH, Jordan (AP) -- Islamic State extremists can pose "a very serious threat" to divided Libya if rival governments there fail to reach a unity deal quickly, the United Nations envoy to the North African country said Saturday.
Bernadino Leon, who is mediating political talks, told a regional conference of the World Economic Forum that he hopes for a deal before the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in mid-June.
Libya has fragmented since the capital of Tripoli was overrun last year by Islamist-allied militias who set up their own government and parliament there while Libya's internationally recognized government withdrew to the east of the country.
The U.N. mediator said his latest draft for a unity deal has been accepted by the eastern-based government, while some in the Tripoli camp have recently come out in support of a national dialogue. He said this has given him some hope a deal might be possible, though he stopped short of saying he was optimistic.

(35,296 posts)An obscure post from two months ago merits a call-out?
I'd expect far more cries that this is Bush II's fault. After all, no Iraq War no AQ in the Middle East, that means no insurgency in the west of Iraq, no hiding for the insurgents in Syria, no Islamist groups able to take advantage of the Western-backed civil war in Syria or the Western-permitted civil war in Libya.
It's like playing 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. For any problem in the world today, see how many degrees of separation there are between it and Bush II. And if there are 6 or fewer, it means Bush II is uniquely and solely (and personally) responsible for it.
It provides a perfect psychological defense mechanism to prevent having to deal with the present.

(25,699 posts)The two can share blame for what's going on with Daesh in Syria and Iraq (Bush started the fire with the war in Iraq, Obama threw fuel on it with his support for the Syrian insurgents) but Libya falls square at the feet of barack obama and hillary clinton, as president and secretary of state respectively

(62,269 posts)Pretty sure I said nothing about worry. Venezuela's murderous state of affairs is hardly reassuring.
Libya will be fine.
But nice to have a fan.
