Opry owner, Wisconsin company sue over Nashville floods
Source: CNN
The owner of country music's Grand Ole Opry sued the U.S. government on Monday, accusing two federal agencies of turning the 2010 flood that struck Nashville into a man-made catastrophe.
Gaylord Entertainment was joined in the lawsuit by A.O. Smith, the Wisconsin-based water-heater manufacturer that saw one of its plants along the Cumberland River inundated in the May 2010 flood. Their lawsuit names the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service, which have acknowledged that a lack of communication undercut flood warnings.
"It is a simple fact that we incurred millions of dollars in damages because the Corps released so much water into the Cumberland River that it rose above the 100-year flood plain," the companies said in a joint statement. "We have a fiduciary responsibility to our shareholders to seek remuneration for the losses we sustained as a result of this negligence, and also to ensure that both parties make significant process improvements to prevent a man-made disaster from occurring in any future flood event."
The Cumberland eventually crested at nearly 52 feet in downtown Nashville, almost 12 feet over flood stage and about 10 feet higher than forecast. The flooding killed 11 people in the city and inflicted more than $2 billion in damage, with an additional 15 people killed in the surrounding region.

(26,284 posts)They are in essence complaining because the building they built on a flood plain was damaged in a flood? Is that about right?

(26,068 posts)They are, rightly, suing because they were not told the Army was opening the dam, even after they called and asked. After the dam was opened, WITH NO ADVANCE WARNING, the flooding was horrific. Residents had no time to save anything, and many lost everything they owned. Luckily, the manager of the convention center was proactive, and evacuated guests under his care. They could have been enormous loss of life from opening the dam WITH NO ADVANCE WARNING. It wasl uck this didn't happen.

(26,284 posts)I will point out building on a flood plain and complaining when you get flooded kinda is dumb regardless of how sudden or unexpected said flood was. Why? Because its a flood plain.

(36,392 posts)actually have consequences, besides lower taxes. Fucking right-wing hypocrites.
Are they gonna sue God for letting it rain so much? Pretty soon they'll be suing cause they don't have enough water.

Just a wild guess. Nashville tends to be MIGHTY republican.

Growing up in Nashville, I had great memories of Opryland until Gaylord screwed it.

(2,977 posts)Nashville is very blue, like Memphis. About from where I'm at - Eastern Middle TN - all the way East to NC is where the Red shit stain is. However, I have seen plenty of Obama stickers and signs in Cookeville, but not a single one for Rmoney. For what it's worth, our local politics is very blue in a nationally red county. Go figure...

(3,452 posts)They did not tell anyone they were going to open the dam and subdivisions were suddenly flooded with no advance warning. Opryland Hotel had called the corps and were told there was no danger of flooding. The manager took it upon himself to evacuate the place, a huge undertaking, and it is a good thing because when the corps opened the dam they never gave them warning. Thousands of people lost everything with no chance to save anything because the corps gave no notice.

(26,068 posts)A friend is from Nashville, and said the damage was just horrific. I've seen photos, but that's never enough.
There was no excuse for The Corps inaction and bungling.

(3,452 posts)I do know there was a lot of coverage at the time that direct calls to the corps resulted in assurances there would be no flooding and then they opened the dams. If authorities were told that is news but I'm sure it will come out in the trial. My end of town flooded horribly but no one is suing because it was just due to the rain. The corps has called it a 1000 year flood but I'm not sure how they would know that.

(36,392 posts)they scream that the government is too oppressive, and costs too much, and that there are too many lawyers and law suits, until an act of God hits, at which time they blame the government and sue.
I hate Republicans.

(3,452 posts)Most of TN is red, but not Nashville. They aren't suing over the act of God, but over the lack of communication from the corps. Could they not have given at least a ten minute warning? Oh, yeah, we are opening the gates and there is about to be ten feet of water in your house. At least give them time to get in the car and drive out of there.

On the other hand the Opry is important to the local economy.

(36,392 posts)Think of the outcry that would have arisen on Hate Radio if the NOLA 9th ward had sued George Bush over the Katrina floods, where thousands did die because of the Bush's dereliction.
Wake up. Right-wingers - all of them - are devout liars, hypocrites, and partisans. These people would not be suing if Bush was still in the white House. If you side with them you are part of the problem.

(10,039 posts)Isn't this the flood where it flooded places that simply don't flood? Seriously. It was a 1,000 year flood. Anyone who got out of that without damages was lucky.
