North Carolina governor to veto opt-out bill for officials opposing gay marriage

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

RALEIGH, N.C. (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory said on Thursday he would veto legislation allowing government officials to refuse to perform marriages by citing religious objections.

The measure, passed by the state's Republican-led House of Representatives earlier in the day, would protect those who oppose same-sex weddings from losing their jobs.

The Republican governor said no public officials who swore to defend the Constitution and perform their duties of office should be exempt from upholding their oath.

"I recognize that for many North Carolinians, including myself, opinions on same-sex marriage come from sincerely held religious beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman," he said. "However, we are a nation and a state of laws."

....money talks and bullshit walks.

He probably seen the pounding Indiana took and figured that signing the bill was committing economic/political suicide. It'll be interesting to see how his teabag base reacts to this.

Apparently McCrory has been rather stung personally by all the public outcry over the absurdist faction running the legislature and the party. He doesn't enjoy being ridiculed over their fanaticism.

Life is tough at the top, they say...

But even the Koch brothers put money above principle... every time. Republican "principles" are negotiable, obviously.

He could just let it sit there on his desk and do nothing (he's done that with legislation before). He's tricky like that. I don't trust him as far as I can throw him.
