A police K-9 came to the rescue of an officer who was being ambushed by three men and the dog most likely saved his life, authorities said today.
Deputy Todd Frazier was traveling along a remote stretch of Highway 90 in Pearlington, Mississippi, on Monday when he saw a blue Lincoln Town Car at a deserted rest stop, said Sheriff Ricky Adam of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.
"Two individuals surprised Deputy Frazier from the shadows and an altercation ensued," Adam said. "One cut him across the forehead with a razor, one choked him, and one grabbed his legs to carry him to the edge of the woods."
Frazier was able to hit a button to release his K-9, Lucas, a black Belgian Malinois, from his car, Adam said. Lucas bit the attackers, who then tried to flee in their car.

(33,063 posts)They might have been waiting to car-jack someone, or something even more sinister.
It's possible that when the deputy pulled in, they felt they had no other choice but to kill him, or else risk being arrested or shot by him.

(6,819 posts)About 10 years ago, a previously-convicted child molester snuck into a house and kidnapped a little girl from her bedroom. He was carrying the girl when he saw the family dog sitting and waiting for him at the bottom of the steps. It was a Rhodesian Ridgeback - which was bred to hunt lions. The guy dropped the girl and tried to run.
The police were able to easily get a conviction because they could match the missing shards of flesh to the dog's bitemark.

(14,881 posts)My rescue Luna is a Rhodie-cross. When I'd had him for just a couple months, a neighbor's dog visited my minifarm. Luna was running for his life -- terrified of other dogs -- and stopped at the top of the hill to look back. He saw the neighbor's ~125 pound dog starting to launch at me.
Little 45 pound Luna forgot his fears and came flying back down the hill. All I saw was a shrieking, yellow blur. He launched for the neighbor's dog's throat, stayed on his shoulder all the way across our property, stopped at the perimeter stone wall and ran back and forth along the wall shrieking like a banshee the entire time.
They'll stop at nothing to protect their family.

(37,512 posts)..."Hero K9 Lucas, who helped rescue a Mississippi deputy from an ambush attack by three men, is recovering and expected to be "fine," Hancock County Sheriff's Department said.
"While Canine Lucas suffered a torn ligament, some broken teeth and road rash, we are happy to report that though he is still recovering, he is expected to be fine," the department wrote on its Facebook page on May 27." The dog bit at least one of the suspects, potentially saving the officer's life.
"We don't know how many he got, we just know he had blood all over him,"
The release button is only on 2 of the 4 K9 cars and was only recently installed. I bet they are installing them on the other 2 cars today. It sounds like it was a very very close call.

(27,461 posts)I remember my dad saying he thought he was a Belgian Shepherd. He even joked about selling him to the Air Force.
My brother and I bought him at a pet store for $29 dollars. My parents were pissed. But they both cried like babies when Maynard died 12 years later.
He was a great dog.
