GA Rep. Price: Opening Health Insurance To People With Pre-Existing Conditions Is A ‘Terrible Idea’

Source: ThinkProgress

One of the most popular provisions of the Affordable Care Act prevents insurers from denying coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions. But Republicans seek to repeal the law in its entirety and have gone to great lengths to oppose the new consumer protection. Just ask Georgia Rep. Tom Price, a medical doctor, who has introduced a replacement bill which would not require insurance companies to accept people with pre-existing conditions. When asked why he omitted that provision, Price was blunt in his assessment:

They are even divided over whether some of the popular pieces of Obama’s health law are a good idea. For example, most Republicans support the health law’s requirement that insurance companies accept all applicants — but the replacement plan put forward by the most prominent Republican ignores that idea.

“It’s a terrible idea,” Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), the sponsor of the plan, told POLITICO. He said Democrats only enacted the provision in order to require exactly what kinds of insurance Americans must have. He would rather expand coverage voluntarily.

Price may think opening coverage to Americans who need it most is a “terrible idea,” but for many of those Americans, it is a matter of life or death. As many as 122 million Americans have an illness which could result in an insurer denying them coverage; they paid as much as $4,844 more a year for health care than those without pre-existing conditions. And a study from 2009 found that 45,000 Americans a year died because they don’t have access to care.

First, we terminate YOUR government-provided healthcare coverage; then we send you out into the market for YOU to find coverage.

At 57, I'm pretty certain the good folks in the insurance industry can find a reason to exclude you; whether for an actual pre-existing condition or because you are approaching the age that, actuarially, you will begin to cost them a lot of money.

One thing that Arizona politicians from Arpaio to Brewer have accomplished is to render themselves incapable of being satirized. No satirist could invent any proposition so ridiculous that it would be unlikely to be true in AZ.

The entire state legislature, include some of the Democrats, has taken self-parody to artform levels. But what is most troubling, is their apparent failure to recognize it, or care that they, and by extension, the state is the subject of national ridicule.

The other speaker is Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Notice how Price uses talking points and also seems to take the 2010 GOP takeover of the House as some sort of mandate, as though the nation relied only on one chamber for laws.

I used to like him (before he ran for Congress) and hoped that he would be on our side once he got there.

But he is so deep in the pockets of the Republicans and the insurance industry, I think he has completely lost his moral compass.

Shame on you, Tom (and I hope you read this).

Tue May 1, 2012, 04:04 PM

it's called birth!

We all start to age once we're born. Some better than others. Will broken legs prevent you from getting coverage if you fell once as a kid? How about your eyes? Is getting old and losing your focus a pre-existing condition? Of course it is. We grow up and we grow old. We get the flu. We get colds. We get glasses and some of us hearing aids. Some of us have carpal tunnel too from repetitive motion careers. What are we supposed to do? Pay 12000 a year for premiums that reject every treatment we get? Why bother.

Make health care part of being human and why is it that every other first world country 'GETS THAT' except the USA.
A healthy citizenry is a healthy nation, economically, emotionally and culturally.

One can dream right?

And while we are at it, we shouldn't be offering education to those who are uneducated. Education should be reserved for those people who are already educated. Putting uneducated people in the school system drives down the quality of out standardized tests scores and drives up costs as we try to educate them.

Price is simply reflecting that our current system is based on profit. if you force insurance companies to cover those that have pre-existing conditions and may cost them, their profits go down. Boo-hoo Wall Street. Further the big bad Obamacare makes insurance companies actually spend their money on providing healthcare and not exotic trips for executives with prostitutes.

Those with pre-existing conditions are exactly the people that the health care system needs to serve. They have conditions that may require occasional or continuous treatment. But healthcare is about caring for those that have health issues.

Correction, health care should be about promoting healthy life styles and preventive care and only, as a last resort, caring for the sick.

Price should have his medical license revoked for such foolishness. Unfortunately the un-Deal Deal in Georgia loves him some "price time".
