(1,897 posts)but isn't. Obama can put a stop to this without going through Congress.
I like Obama but this (and the TPP) are two things where I think he is failing us.

(28,017 posts)Either the masses get a fair share, or the top 1% can concentrate all that wealth.
That is fatally flawed. With a striving middle class, the entire economy grows, and grows more evenly, meaning the poor and need have less of a load and are easier to care for.
If you concentrate the wealth too much, then the same factors that led Karl Marx to predict revolution and how capitalism will fail will come to the forefront. Then, the 1% seriously need to fear for their lives. Hungry, unemployed mobs of gun toting angry people won't be stopped by a mere restricted community sign and wooden gate.
I keep wondering when the super rich will realize just how dangerous the conditions that they may be creating are.
For myself, violence is not an option. Too much harm and danger lies in that path.
I started reading Marx again last night. As an economist, he was quite prescient.

(10,857 posts)Reagan's DEA spent most of 1985 and 1986 cracking down on marihuana, and it was the only time I ever saw the drug wars tip in the government's favor. You couldn't score a lid from Tommy Chong that summer.
It was in order to create a supply vacuum so that Ollie North could sell crack cocaine.

As far as I know US Attorney for Northern California still has her job and she's still trying to shut down oaklands harbor side dispensary.

(13,184 posts)The actual version does not say DEA and FBI but "law enforcement," and later on it does not say DEA but "officials."
This is bogus. The raid was done by local law enforcement. No feds. No FBI. No DEA.
See my posts at the end of the thread for more info.

(14,255 posts)Loretta Lynch, the nominee for attorney general, said Wednesday during her confirmation hearing that she does not support the legalization of marijuana, and that she disagrees with President Barack Obama's remarks about the drug being no more dangerous than alcohol.
During her hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) asked, "Do you support the legalization of marijuana?"
"Senator, I do not," Lynch replied.
The rest of the article is interesting. Lynch will not stop prosecuting no matter what state laws are in place; federal prosecution can be easily excused if they say they are afraid pot will be in the hands of kids and a few other things. She disagrees with Obama on the subject.
Lynch also declines to prosecute Wall Street, and is really on board with civil forfeiture.
She's wrong about this,
..."and that she disagrees with President Barack Obama's remarks about the drug being no more dangerous than alcohol."
"Lynch also declines to prosecute Wall Street, and is really on board with civil forfeiture."
Little by little, our Federal government loses it legitimacy.
And then there's this. Not the Feds mind you, but what the Cops did was totally inexcusable. This is shades of what dictatorships do to dissenters to send a message. Thom Hartmann had her and her lawyer on his show this morning.

(37,051 posts)Serious question-- if the head of the executive branch is not responsible for the actions of a California U.S. Atty, then who is? If Obama is the "exact wrong person," then who is the right person to blame? Does all the blame rest with the U.S. Atty, or does her boss share some responsibility for her actions on the job?

This kind of thing will not be tolerated under a republican administration but someone Obama will get a big pass on this. This is one reason why I am not too hopeful for the future. Americans are becoming way too partisan to demand for any meaningful change.

(3,157 posts)The DEA is a redundant and parasitic government agency that provides absolutely no value to society whatsoever. The controlled substances act of 1970 should be repealed in it's entirety and the DEA abolished. We would be better off burning our tax dollars in a giant bonfire than to continue to fund this bullshit. Drug prohibition is a crime against humanity.

(14,255 posts)And I saw an OP somewhere on DU asking how has drug addiction affected you?
I am worried that this is a feel-good (who could be against heroin addiction?!?) framework for beefing up the DEA and local law enforcement. Two birds with one stone - police would LOVE to get more power, and who would deny that addiction is very bad?
Of course, this is not how to cure or mitigate addiction, but I wonder if this is the package that will be sold.

(13,184 posts)Yes, a dispensary was raided in Tahoe. No, the feds didn't have anything to do with it.
Here's the actual story the OP linked to: http://blog.sfgate.com/smellthetruth/2015/06/02/federal-medical-marijuana-crackdown-continues-in-california/
The OP (or somebody) has altered crucial words in this story. The mention of the DEA and the FBI in the opening sentences is different from from the actual story says ("law enforcement"
, and the DEA reference is also different from the actual text ("officials"
. The actual story does not mention the DEA or FBI at all, but does mention several local law enforcement entities. These changes take a local police operation and fabricate out of it a raid by the feds. It's simply not true. In fact, if you search local media stories about this, you see it appears to be a local, possibly politically-motivated vendetta, not another example of Obama's Justice Department run amok. In any case, altering the text of news stories is dishonest.

Search Warrants Executed at South Lake Tahoe Marijuana Dispensary TWC and Residence of Dispensary Owner Cody Bass
On Monday, June 1st, 2015, members of the El Dorado County Sheriffs Office, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County District Attorneys Office, California Department of Justice, South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team (SLEDNET) Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Board of Equalization (BOE) and Employment Development Department (EDD) executed search warrants at five locations relating to an investigation of the South Lake Tahoe marijuana dispensary Tahoe Wellness Collective and its owner Cody Bass concerning possible violation of tax evasion and illegal possession for sale of marijuana.
This joint investigation of TWC and Cody Bass by state, county and city law enforcement agencies has been ongoing for several months. No one was arrested, as the investigation is still ongoing. Investigators seized large amounts of evidence and documents which all need to be fully evaluated and audited before any decision is made as to potential charges in this case.
Any further inquiries in this matter should be directed to the El Dorado County District Attorneys Office.
